Florida Southwestern State College formerly Edison State College. I started thread for FSW but it is full with spring applicants. So I decided to start a new one for this upcoming fall.
Who is joining me next fall in nursing?
I plan to apply for Part-time or Lee full time. I have one more semester of pre-requisites. I am taking A&P 1, Micro, College Algebra and Nutrition. Kill me now. lol A full time semester of craziness but almost done after that hopefully with pre-requisites with the exemption of A&P 2 and a humanities class.
I plan to take the Hesi in mid Feb or march and retake if needed at the end of April. Schedule has been posted and I plan to study a lot this winter break. So excited but so nervous.
I grew up in Oregon and dropped out of high school when I was 15. At the time my mom was in nursing school and I was basically raising my sister and raising hell at the same time : ). I didn't care about school just hanging with my friends and working on 4x4's. I moved to Fort Myers when I turned 18 and spent most of the time living on Fort Myers Beach partying during the day and working as a bouncer at night. That life quickly caught up with me and by the time I was 23 I decided I needed to get my life together so I got my EMT licence through Edison back in 2004 and on June 13th I will be celebrating 10 years here at Bayfront Health Punta Gorda (old Charlotte Regional Medical Center). I've been running their hyperbaric facility as safety director and CHT for eight years. About 4 years ago I decided I was at a plateau in my career and decided I wanted to get into critical care nursing as my mother has been for about 20 years now. It has taken me 4 years taking two classes a semester to get to this point I will be receiving my A.S. in the Fall and hopefully starting nursing school as well. I can't wait to hear all your stories : ) good luck every one hopefully we find out this week!
I hope we all get in, I would be proud to be in the same graduating class with all of you. I love the determination and passion for this that you all have.I have a question for all you guys... What is your background story and what made you want to become a nurse?
I grew up in fort Myers. I've lived here my whole life, even in the same house, never moved. I struggled for a long time deciding what to do with my life. There wasn't a single career path that I was interested in. I finally realized that I was really into science. My mom is an RN and I grew up around it. I was debating on being a nurse for a while but wasn't quite sure. I remember thinking "I wish there was a sign that this is what I'm meant to do". When one day I was at the gym, and there was a guy having a seizure. I ran over and helped him until the paramedics got there. It was such an adrenaline rush but I loved it. I took that as my "sign" that this is what I'm supposed to do. Ever since then I reaaaally wanted to be a nurse and help people, I can't imagine even doing anything else.

I graduated high school as a single mom in May 2012. I had no idea what direction I wanted to move forward in, but I knew I had to move forward for my daughter. I am a serious science lover and also completely love to study people as well as help them. After much thought I decided nursing may be a good fit. I started taking prerequisites but it wasn't until my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer that I really, like deeply decided I WILL BE a nurse. We were very close and I took her to doctors appointments when my grandpa had to work. She spent a lot of time in the hospital as well and in the end she had hospice care at home. It wasn't until my journey with her that made me deeply respect, appreciate, and admire nurses and what they do. Nurses are great.:)
I moved to Naples many moons ago. My background is mostly military.(edit- My family, not myself. My, father, mother and grandfather. Should have been clear on that. Very Sorry)
I had worked behind a desk as a financial counselor or most say collector in many different practices. I have always wanted to be more than that to a patient.(Even collectors develop a relationship with patients, especially in Oncology) I have been fortunate enough to have had physicians that I worked for let me observe what they do as well as the nurses that worked for them. It just made me envious because I too wanted to be something more to that patient but couldn't because I did not have the skills. I have always wanted to be more involved in the care of folks. Sick or Not.
It was a matter of when and how.
Here I am after many years with the hope that I will be able to do what I have always wanted.
Thanks for sharing your stories!! :) You guys are awesome. I'm glad that you guys are going after what you want to and are meant to do!
I was one of those kids that was sick all the time...not just with colds and flus...I was a very sick child, immunosuppressed. I was taken care of by doctors, nurses, and aides that were so kind...as a child I looked up to them like they were angels. My grandmother was an LPN and my step-sister who is much older than I; she became an RN when I was young...she is now a CRNA. My father was the CEO of a continuing care community in Naples and so I grew up around many people in the medical field. I started off working as a CNA, and while I was working as a CNA I went to school for LPN...Pregnant.. and I would not do that again LOL!!! Nursing school is hard enough without being pregnant on top of it... I graduated LPN in 2011 and my husband I separated in 2012 and here I am now...a single mother (my ex-husband moved away to NY almost 2 years ago) and I'm hoping to be accepted into the RN program...*crossing fingers* I love being an LPN...however, I want to venture out into this profession and learn more and go as far as I can.
I hope we all make it!
I wish they'd just email us and let us know already lol!!
