FSU BSN 2015

Published

Hello all,

I haven't seen anyone start a thread at all for hopefuls for the BSN program at FSU to start fall 2015.

Anyone else out there apply?

Has anyone received acceptance letter from FSU Accelerated Nursing Program starting Spring 2016?

Hello all, my name is Laura. I graduated from the FSU Accelerated Nursing Program in August 2015. If you all have any questions or concerns about the program and its curriculum please feel free to ask! :-) :-) :-)

Hey Laura_Bailly, BSN, TN

How was the first semester of the program?

Hey ashg2015! I am not sure if the Accelerated Nursing Spring 2015 schedule will reflect our Fall 2014 schedule. Last I heard FSU CON was trying to double the size of the program so there may be some changes. We had 24 students in our cohort, I believe they are going for 40 students next year.

Our first semester consisted of 4 classes: Foundations (with lab and clinicals at a nursing home), Vulnerable Populations (with Psych and Community clinical rotation), Pharmacology, and Health Assessment (with lab). We had several skill check offs for Foundation lab such as sterile gloving, foley caths, NG tubes. Health Assessment lab consisted of focused assessments such as cardiovascular, respiratory, etc. The program is pretty intense; however, it is absolutely doable. Be organized (I had two calendars), support your classmates (they will become your second family) and get to know your professors! Most importantly take time for yourself!

Wow! How was pharmacology and the drug calculations? Was it hard...did the professors explain the material well?!

I was accepted for Spring 2016 ABSN at FSU. Has anyone else received an acceptance letter/email? I'm curious about the schedule as well (Are you in class everyday or are there certain days off?)

I think this year's ABSN class is going to be different than the past. They were talking about increasing the number of acceptances and changing it up a little bit. One of the instructors told me that Spring 2016 ABSN group was going to be totally different than ours. IDK if that's the case. Last year's ABSN started Aug 25 and we had Tues/Weds off until mid-October, then it was Mon-Fri til the end. For our cohort, two weekdays were dedicated strictly to clinical. Some clinical groups were on the weekend too, but I wasn't in any of those so I don't know about that. In my opinion, the program was extremely disorganized with things constantly changing. Be flexible and able to adapt to constant change. There is little downtime in the ABSN. It was very stressful, but a decent program. I mean, I learned what I was supposed to. Just could've done without the BS. I am 50/50 on the program. I'm glad it's over and wouldn't do it again, but I am proud of my BSN!

Ha. I know this was meant for Laura, but I will chime in if that's cool. I taught myself drug math. There are a few different ways to work out drug calculations so I had to find what worked for me. I literally sat in a books-a-million for 6 hours and taught myself. The great thing about the pharm class is they test from the powerpoints so as long as you take good notes and study your ppts, you should be ok. The best advice I can give anyone in traditional or accelerated is to stay on top of your studying.

Thank you so much...great advice!!

Hey!

_zoubisoubisou_ Explained it perfectly. For Pharm, I studied the PowerPoint slides and used them to answer questions from a study guide that was given a couple of days before the test. Use whatever you feel will help you learn the different classes of meds. I created charts and several mnemonics to help with memorization. I would suggest buying Mosby's Pharmacology Notecards if you are a visual learner. I still use this as a reference today. Once you start clinical rotation your preceptor will make you complete medication flashcards as well.

Drug math wasn't really taught well during class. It was more of a review. I taught myself with the drug math textbook that is "required" for the course. It definitely helps out. If you are still not sure how to solve a drug math problem FSU CON has a tutor available on certain days. Also your professors are very welcoming and really enjoy helping students out, never hesitate to reach out to them for help.

@crimsonsky : Have you received anything about class registration yet. I only received my orientation packet today, but still wondering about when to register and what to register for?
