I know this is early, but I am sure there are Fall hopefuls out there for 2011.
Anyone out there yet, or am I just overly eager?
There will be some things that you can wait on, like you won't need your khakis and polo until you are going to the hospital to get your clinical assignments, and your white uniform won't be needed until you actually start clinicals. But, if you are going to buy yours new just make sure you order it in time to arrive before clinicals start. The shoes you can also wait on... only needed to wear with white uniform... and the clipboard and pocket protector you can wait on too. Pretty much everything else you have to have starting day 1, I think the skills kit we started using week 2.
This is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I will tell you that it will feel so good the first day you go to the hospital!! It was like I was stepping into a place I was meant to be! You will stay up late doing care plans, your kids will constantly want you to hold and/or play with them and you will feel bad, but everyone has told me that after first term things do get better and I believe them!! As I said it one of my other posts, utilize your resources, especially Evolve!! If not for doing the practice N-CLEX questions for Concepts on Evolve I wouldn't have passed the tests. Also, when you start doing clinicals there is a database through the library/learning commons link on the FSCJ website that will help you with all of your drug and lab information!! That saved me HOURS worth of work!! I am not sure if we are allowed to put our e-mail in here, but I am going to try. It is [email protected] Feel free to ask me questions anytime, but just be patient for a reply, I am not sure what I might have going on at the time. Good Luck everyone!!
Hi cb4ever07,Thanks for the info. I have several questions if you don't mind...
Are you in the days or n/w?
How much time per day/wk do you spend studying/completing assignments?
How much time are you away from home in class/clinicals?
I want to be as ready as possible for my new schedule..especially where my kids are concerned.
Thanks a bunch!

P.S. congrats on being accepted and pulling thru the first semester
I was reading through this posting and wanted to reply to some of the questions. I am currently in the N&W program first term. Yes there is a lot of reading but honestly I just use the powerpoints and notes my professors hand out and only read through the book based on those two things and I have great grades. I do not spend every waking moment studying! Sorry but I am a single parent and split my time equally between him and school. First term is hectic but just do your assignments study the way you normally study and don't panic. I always cram for everything...but that's just me. I will read my power points throughout the week, maybe an hour a day. Other than that I spend Sunday afternoon and Monday morning studying for the Monday night exam(s). Everyone is different in how they test take and study so do whatever helps you. The calendar is the major thing to get because there is a lot to keep up with. My main point on here was term 1 is difficult but you can still have a life. Do not let this consume you and your time away from your family. Pay attention in class and take notes and you will be fine. Keep in mind...if this is something you really want and you were meant to do it, then you will do great!!!! Most of this stuff around week 7 becomes second nature to you. Your critical thinking and common sense play a huge part so no matter how hard you study if you don't have those two things it won't matter. 1 professor told me no matter how good you do on a test if you get into the field and are only book smart and can not apply critical thinking and common sense then you will not do well as a nurse. She said those two things sometimes go much further than book information. Good luck and like everyone said, this will be your new second family (slightly dysfunctional at times)! lol
I know a lot of crammers too, but it is going to depend on how you study and what helps you learn best. Days is different from N/W because our tests are at 11 am so we don't get to study much on Mondays before the exam. That would be very helpful though. I have to write out things to remember them, others have to hear it out loud, and still others learn just by reading. What kind of learner you are will determine how you study. Good Luck.
Practice practice practice. They start you out slow with the critical thinking questions, but toward the end of the term the tests will have more critical questions. In the books there are practice questions at the end of each chapter that are N-CLEX style questions and those are the critical thinking questions. If you break it down they are still knowledge based questions, you just have to know what would be the most important thing to do first in a certain situation. Like if you have a client who has a sudden change in level of consciousness, what would be the first thing you do. Well, the first thing would be to check the client's O2 Saturation level, but they will also have things like Check Blood pressure, call for help, etc... You just have to figure out what is most important, that is where critical thinking comes into play. Also, the N-CLEX book that comes with the book package is a really good source to practice the critical thinking questions. Even before tests skim through the areas that pertain to the test you are about to take because I have seen test questions come from that book almost word for word.
Although the name got starred out, I know who you are talking about, C.J. or S.J, depending on how she spells her name. She is really nice and very helpful!! I plan on being a mentor next term so you might see me around, especially around the time yall need to practice your foley and PICC Line dressing change. You are on the best ride of your life now!! I am so happy for you!!

wow, that is a lot of information!
I second you on the study group importance...it has helped me tremendously in my pre-req's so I can only imagine how much I will need a group in NS.
If I am accepted, I will have to take up a collection with my F&F to come up with $900 out of pocket in such short time :smackingf
