frustrated wannabe nurse

Published

I have an extensive medical background but have been out of the field for many years. I really want to enter the nursing field. I should have done it a long time ago. I need 3 classes that I have already taken (but not within 5 years) to enter a program. Those are Anatomy, Physiology and Micro. I am having a terrible time getting in to any Junior College to finish these up. Has anyone taken any of those LVN courses that are offered at "trade" schools? I was thinking I could perhaps do that and then move onto an RN position with some more education. I have to start somewhere. I would eventually like to go into trauma nursing. I was an athletic trainer for 10 years and also an EMT. Any information would be appreciated.

dadsdutchgirl,

Welcome to the site. I will be starting a LPN program this month. After I obtain my license, I intend to apply for an accelerated RN program. I chose this route, as there is a horrible waiting list for the traditional RN program.

However in order for me to transfer to an accelerated RN program I still need to take Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology. I don't think there is any way out it, as most colleges/university RN programs require these pre-reqs.

My understanding is that any Anatomy and Physiology courses taken at a LPN (tech) level are not valid and will need to be retaken at a college level. I believe your college should at least honor the Microbiology (as it is a pre-req for A&P). Call local colleges/universities and see how far back they are willing to go for pre-reqs.

Good luck!

I attended an LVN program at one of those proprietary 'trade schools' from October 2004 to October 2005. It served its purpose and I was able to pass my state boards on the very first attempt. The only downside is the fact that these types of fast-track programs tend to be enormously expensive. My tuition was $20,000.

Now I plan to complete an LVN-to-RN bridge program in the very near future.

Can anyone recommend an accredited LVN school in the Orange County/LA County area? There are so many!

Thanks!
