From full time to per diem

Specialties Geriatric

Published

I just finish my first week of orientation. I used to work per diem in another facility and I made $12 more per hour. I am a experienced nurse working full time but I do not need benefits, so I am thinking to ask HR on Monday to change me from full time to Per Diem. My dilemma: How to ask them in a professional way in my second week of orientation? Opinions please.

unfortunately that isn't an option. stinks right?

are benefits an option that you can choose not to take? maybe you can keep the permanent position just without the benefits? i've worked for places where benefits were an option and that may boost your paycheck a bit - some companies may even pay you to waive the benefits... i'd ask hr if you can waive the benefits - i would assume :D that you may have that option instead of giving up the position for per diem.

good luck!

lastly, i am certain not all employers are as harsh as you claim you're helping me see.

:lol2: shabby...do you work in ltc?

i wish all employers were a bit more by the book and not make up rules as they go. it isn't fair to the other staff. yes, rules need to be bent sometimes, but not all the time at the expense of the other staff and the residents.

have you read any of nascar's other posts? i would love to work with her and alot of other posters on this board. i'm not sure you got the gist of the post you were comenting on.

I AM responding...but just to say "I LOVE YOU MICHELLE126"! :yeah:

Geesh...the OP asked for opinions and I gave one. Shame on me. (Not really, I gave up trying to please everyone a long time ago once I realized it couldn't be done. Fair and consistent wins everytime).

I am a charge nurse in LTC. I fully agree with Nascar, and I am very fair to work with. Sorry, but we have standards to maintain. Calling off or changing shifts regularly is very time consuming for the nurses, and unfair for other employees. Often, instead of working hands on with my residents, I find myself either fiddling with the schedule or calling people to replace shifts. This is true for the other Charge nurses at my facility. Try to consider the whole picture.

I know the economy is tough and many of those working prn would love a full time position. However, lets keep it civil here and debate the topic, not the poster.

Thanks everyone!
