Fresno...Fresno...Fresno

U.S.A. California

Hello everyone,

Anyone working in Fresno....? I plan to move there from Canada. Looks great! Is it really a wonderful place to live and work? Anyone have input? How do you like it?

:trout:

Please, Please be VERY careful about where they send you! Trust me- the address makes a huge difference in Fresno!! The agencies may tell you its nice and safe but reality is it may be a nightmare!

I remember years ago we were moving to Bridgeport CT from NH and a cowoker of my husbands swore up and down not only was this a nice rental, the area was GREAT!!! Well 3 days after moving in, the house 2 doors to the right was raided by a rival gang with UZIs and machetes and masks in broad daylight! That one AND the the house 2 doors to the left were both major crackhouses. The corner store needed security guards that were armed- it was bad. Needless to say I never finished unpacking, not even the dishes and we ate out until we could move a week later to a decent place in another city nearby. Mind you we had SEVERAL people tell us this was a nice area!

So please be safe. Fresno is beautiful but it is also dangerous in certain areas.

This is very true. It is crucial to move North of Herndon as another poster said. These are very nice areas. There are some nice looking areas South of Herndon, but they only look nice. I lived in a beautiful Townhouse just South of Herndon and my boys got jumped by gang wannabes. This is why I moved back to Clovis. That said, I would live just about anywhere in Clovis or North of Herndon. If you need, I can get you some zipcodes in which to search.

We do not have hookers, bums, Media stores, or anything like Fresno

*** No hookers or Media stores? What do you all do for fun? :)

Just be careful with whcih facility that you get placed at, if in Fresno, some are in areas that you woukd not want to be in.

There are some very dangerous areas there..............can you be specific as to which part of Fresno that you will be working in?

I am only a pre nursing student, but living in clovis my whole life i can give some insight:

i would like to 2nd and 3rd what everyone is saying about either live in clovis or north of herndon, even if the house looks nice, dont chnce it by living anywhere else. Also someone talked about st agnes? i agree especially if you are interested in cardiology since they just built the new cardiology wing which supposidly kicks a$$....or clovis community or valley childrens, it just depends on what you are interested in. University med center gets alot of trauma, but in the worst part of town, i have visited a few times and am always scared( the first time i went there and was down in the lobby area waiting to find out if a friend had died, a man kept harassing me saying he knew me and would follow me when i walked away, secuirity had to be called) anyways, i love clovis and feel safe anytime of night. The police dept. is the best, the town is so quiet that if you call them for the most minor thing, they will have at LEAST 2 units there within 2 min

Hi m_chatelaine (a KD Lang fan?),

First, as a fellow transplanted Canadian (from Edmonton) let me congratulate you on your decision to move to CA. You may be culture-shocked for a while. But CA is a nice place to live. I've stayed in Fresno on business, and given a choice would not want to live there. It's the real wild west, with lots of gang activity after dark.

If you have a choice, consider the SF Bay area. Much nicer area, and lots of Canadians.

Good Luck,

Ryan

No gangs in SF? Are you sure about that?

We do have gangs in the bad side of town, like most other large cities. However, I have never personally been the victim of foul play in the 33 years I've lived here nor have my family or friends. That said, a few summers I went to San Francisco, which I love. While there, I had a man grab my butt, hard, as I walked down the street with my husband. That same trip, someome approached my car and tried to open it to get in, all the while screaming to me that he was hungry. This stuff has never happened to me in Fresno, and especially not Clovis. Would I go into downtown Fresno, other than the Tower District, at night? No! Like most people I stick to the North end of town and Clovis and am very happy. I think the gang talk and how horrible the Fresno area is is a bunch of hype. As I stated before, I've been here my whole life and traveled all over California, and it is a typical Cali. city, sans the gorgeous ocean nearby :scrying:. I'm not saying that I am totally in love with the area. I'd much rather live in the San Diego area or in the Oakhurst mountain area but outside of those, I'm not going anywhere. I think the best idea is to visit and look at the areas that we've suggested. Get an idea for yourself. We truly get a bad wrap in the area.

Suzanne, if you read my post carefully, you would see that I was writing about the SF Bay Area. A seven county metroplex, with over three million in population, and many safe, pleasant communities were you don't have to wear body armor to walk to your car.

Of course there are gangs in SF. We just don't allow them free range...like in Fresno:D

I'm not trying to start anything, by any means, but I'm wondering what data you've used to determine that Fresno lets gangs run free range. You are incorrect in this as the police have implemented huge crackdowns and many tasks force that have cut it nearly in half over recent years I assure you that we have our own safe and pleasant communities in the area as well as MANY in Fresno itself. The problem is that our larger, more popular hotels is where the travelers go. This is NOT the side of town you want to be on. I believe that this is how a lot of people form their opinions. As stated before, stay in North Fresno or even better Clovis. It is very harsh to be judged as an entire city by one area of it. I don't know of a city out there that doesn't have a bad side. Anyway, there it is in a nutshell. I'm retiring from this post. I can only recommend making your mind up for itself and doing some research for actual data and a visit to the area. Good luck.

Phoenix72, of course Fresno has good and bad areas, like any other city. I've even considered applying to the nursing programs there. I was simply being facetious.

Sorry if I offended.

Just be aware that it gets HOT in the Central Valley in the summer. But we don't have hurricanes, or devastating tornadoes. Snow usually stays in the Sierras, and we don't have major problems with flooding. Earthquakes? I don't know when the last one was felt in Fresno.

Sequoia National Park is less than 2 hours away, and you can hike and backpack until October. The same goes for Yosemite NP. You can ski or snowboard about an hour away. There are several lakes in the foothills, and water sports are very popular.

Rush hour can cause stop and go traffic, but nothing like the Bay area or LA, or even Sac. There are lots of shops and restaurants, and also locations for major concerts and other performances.

So come to Fresno. Give the Central Valley a chance. You don't have to wear body armor, some people make ridiculous comments. BTW, I worry more about having problems in the Bay Area, than I would in Fresno.
