Frequency of communication from college

For those of you who have gotten in or who are waiting for "the letter" is it common to constantly get something from the school? I have applied to several CCs and don't get much from them except the update on my wait list "number" a couple tiems a year. Yet, I get something new from the state U every single week now. Bumper stickers, postcards telling me what a great school it is, reminders to get my immunizations, invitations to campus open houses, check lists, info about campus housing, etc. It has been something different every single week lately. Each time I see something in one of their envelopes I freak out. I applied way back in October and don't find out until late May.

My husband said it is a very good sign, but I don't want to get my hopes up too high. I don't want to read something into this if it is routine and everyone gets inundated with such things. Every time they send something it gets me Jonesing. Right now all I want is THAT ACCEPTANCE LETTER not a bumper sticker.

Is this common? Seems expensive! Maybe if they didn't send out so many mailings they could afford to expand the program and offer a spring admission as well!

I think it is common. I never get anything from the CC I applied to. However I get stuff every other day from the University i applied to.

Yeah, it is really common for universities to send stuff, ... mostly I get things for campus housing...in fact I just found out yesterday that I got accepted to the nursing school at this university, so who knows if that means anything that they send other stuff too?? Let us know the results! That is a VERY long wait, as I only waited a little over a month to find out....I have no idea how I would handle waiting all the way from October to MAY! You are very patient! Good luck!

That is why I don't want to get my hopes up. But it seems so cruel to get me excited and hopeful with every mailing. So did you get in? Or are you still waiting?

Universities often have more financial resources than CCs/JCs to send mailings out to promote their programs and other student services they offer, but I definitely think that private universities will send various information most frequently, as they will try to coax students to attend their programs and pay the private university tuition! (And my comment still applies as I'm heading to a private university in the fall...:p)

I read that you got in. Yeah for you! I guess I need to know if people who don't get in get tons of stuff, too. I am wondering if there is any relationship between getting lots of stuff and getting in.

The wait is so long and just keeps getting worse. It got bad after the TEAS when I started thinking I might actually have a chance. Before that it was just a shot in the dark kind of application because I was just planning the ADN route and been on wait lists for a year. I still have a good 2 months at least of waiting, so I better settle down! And no, I am NOT patient! I can handle a rejection because I have other irons in the fire, but I just want to know to plan my life. I can deal with the results, I just can't handle the wait. If I don't get in for fall I will be in for Spring 09. So I guess waiting of some sort is just int he cards for me. Maybe patience is my big lesson.

The only thing I have received so far is a postcard today saying my appication was processed and I would hear back in late April.

I get something weekly from the CC I applied to, but the only thing I have received from the state university is a letter notifying me that they are processing my application. I haven't gotten too obsessive about checking the mail (for now) because application deadlines haven't passed yet, but they will soon, this coming saturday for the CC and April 1 for the university. I know once those deadlines pass checking the mail will be my new pass time. I think I get so much from the CC because that's where I am enrolled now taking prereq's, and I keep getting info about registration deadlines and various activities going on at the school. I did wonder if it was a bad sign that the university hasn't sent me any information about their program, but I just submitted my application about 2 weeks ago, and they seem to want people to get as much information as they can from their website. In fact I will be able to find out if I am accepted or rejected online too. Hopefully that will keep me from attacking the mail man everyday once decision time is officially here :chuckle

Hotflashn: All CSUEB sent out was an email that said I was accepted. No formal letter. I kind of wished I had gotten a letter because I would have framed it. Anyway, I agree you get a lot of mail, and most of it just goes into the trash. At first I was keeping it all but why do I need little cards from alumni telling me how wonderful their school experience was. Anyway, just finished the quarter and am officially on a week's spring break. W00t!! I am heading down to Texas for the National Student Nurses Association convention. Take care, Its just a little longer... Jean

Thanks, Jean. I talked to another CSUEB applicant and she said she is getting tons of mail from them, as well. It must be how they are spending all those app fees! How close was the timing of your acceptance email to the time frame promised? We are supposed to hear by May 31 ... any point in obsessively checking before then? As if I can help it! The end of March is the last day for submission of TEAS results, do they really need 2 months to make decisions? I can totally deal with the outcome (good thing for me, huh?!) either way, I just want to plan my life some.

One last question, do you know how they determine points for GPA? I was looking at Sac States website and it give a concise breakdown on point awards. CSUEB says points are on that it is core prereqs and overall 60 unit GPA, but not how any of it is weighted or determined. I asked the dept at Hayward and they said they only disclose points after the decision is made. Weird, why top secret? Do you know? Not that knowing my points would help me get in, but you know, I am sort of grasping at straws right now.

Have a great time on break!

Hello,

I got the acceptance email on 5/1/07. It was earlier then they said.

As for the points given on GPA I am searching my office (which after finals week is a disaster area) and cannot find the point distribution. Sandra let me see it during one of the prenursing information sessions. The points are only for the prereq classes. You have to have a minimum overall gpa, but the points are applied only to the prereqs. and if you are still working on some they don't count towards acceptance. Once you are accepted you just have to pass them. Although you probably will still kill yourself to try to get those A's. =) I know I was the same way.

Take care,

Jean
