Hi! I was wondering if anyone could give me an answer to my question: I'm a French-American studying in France and am seriously thinking about moving back to the States after graduating. Does anyone out there know if and how I can work as a nurse when I get back home? I can't seem to find any info on the subject. Thanks to anyone who can help me out!!

You will have to meet your BON requirements for foreign trained nurse and only then will you know if your training is OK you will then have to sit and pass NCLEX before you can work as a nurse. Most require a license from the country you trained in unless you are exempt (I doubt you will be)

You are going to nursing school in France? That's cool. I am going to nursing school in Australia and I plan on getting work back in the United States when I am done. I left work at my old hospital and they told me that when I want to come back and work as a nurse I must take the nclex. If you have a passport, are an american citizen and pass the nclex I don't think it'd be a problem. Many of my friends back at the hospital are from the philipenes and they had an easy time getting work as a nurse. Also look for hospitals to sponsor you upon your return. They can usually hook you up.

Hi,

I have a french degree and am working in NYC. You need to go through the CGFNS CES they will evaluate your credentials and send that to the board of nursing. The board will give you the right to take the NCLEX-RN exam. I got my licence for NY. The process is taking a while (18months at least)

Good luck

hello caillou,

you have your nursing diploma in france and are working in ny? will you please contact me directly so i can ask you more questions? my boyfriend is in his last year of nursing school in france (bordeaux). he will finish next december and we are discussing whether he can come and work in the u.s. (i am a u.s. citizen, and we are thinking of getting married, so work visa will not be an issue).

anyway, i would like to get all the information on all the steps for him to be able to come and work here. for example, should he already take the toefl during his last year? are there certain classes that he should try to take? etc. i have a lot of questions and it would be really great to e-mail you directly (or someone else in a similar situation that is willing to answer my questions). you can reach me at

merci bien!

once he has completed his training he will need to go to the cgfns website and complete application for cvs, all foreign trained nurses have to complete this. if the state requires it he will need to pass english exam but if he is getting married to you a usc then english exam may not be necessary (unless hospital requires it i do not think nybon does) average processing times for cvs is 6-8 months and then he needs to sit and pass nclex. until then he can not work in the us as a nurse. only once nybon have assessed his transcripts will a decision be made on whether he meets us requirements
