I m a french nurse, I just come from France, my english is not very good but i'll try to do my best.
I'd like to have some informations about working in the UK, if you could advise me books or magazines to read in order to improve my english in the medical field because i d like to start working from the begining of January 2006.
In France i used to work in neonatal intensive care, i was super and I'd like to continue working in this departement, i love working with chidren or babies.
So, if you can help me giving me some book's references to read or...it will be very nice from you

There is one nursing magazine that is published weekly and can be picked up at many stores throughout the UK that covers current practice and have recent job listings. It is called Nursing Times and it deals with all different areas of nursing and may be helpful to you in getting used to written english used in the medical field. To be fair there are other nursing publications out there, such as Nursing Standard, but I personally have never read any other magazines Sorry!
You might also check out the Royal College of Nursing's website at http://www.rcn.org.uk it has many articles and information which you may find helpful.
Je me suis retrouvée dans ton cas, car mon fiancé étant américain, et vu qu'il souhaite que nous vivions à New York pour l'instant (il ne parle pas un mot de français !), il m'a fallu réviser le DE en anglais et passer le NCLEX pour obtenir ma license professionnelle à NY.
Ce que j'ai fait pour travailler le vocabulaire médical, c'est acheter un dictionnaire médical anglais : "Dorland's pocket medical dictionary" par exemple. J'ai eu beau chercher sur les sites anglais, américains et français, je n'ai trouvé aucune édition français-anglais médical. Il y en a eu mais elles ne sont plus éditées.
Le bouquin pour bucher le NCLEX m'a énormément aidé aussi. J'ai acheté celui de l'édition de Lippincott.
Et puis j'ai lu quelques livres en anglais concernant le métier d'infirmière.
J'ai acheté ces livres sur les sites de Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble aux USA et Kaplan pour les livres sur la profession.

essentially i was going to suggest working as an 'a' grade ( health care assistant ) in any london hospital that you might be interested in. your english doesn't seem to be too bad, pretty good in fact. i made that suggestion because then you'll not only be exposed to the english language ( and many different accents! ) but you will also be exposed to 'medical terms' some of which you'll be surprised to learn are not unknown to you. this way, you'll be improving your english and learning the medical terminology which you may not be familiar with. of course, this is if you don't mind the pay so much. it is not that bad but the bottom line is you get to achieve what you initially wanted to achieve. plus, you'll meet potential colleagues for when you begin your proper job as an rn.

i m living in reading at the moment where there is a big hospital, so i will ask them about that and i ve also planed so work in surgeries or health center at the beginning to familiarize me with the medical system.

Health Care Assistance basicallly assist nurses with daily routine tasks; Helping wash patients, taking & recording observations, weighing them, helping with feeding them if/when required etc. I think they earn +/- £800 per month - after tax, depending on how many weekends you've worked. Qualified nurses; D grades ( or band 5 - depends on your experience or where you are on the scale/how long you've been working for the NHS ) earn from +/- £1300 after tax. Don't quote me on this as the AFC [ agenda for change ] have influenced this. Also, E grades ( also band 5 ... again depends where you are on this scale ) may earn from £1500, once again depends on how many weekends you've worked.
