France - Teenage Pregnancy

Hello,

I am a nurse in the States and will be visitng France in June. I am interested in visitng a school nurse, and a classroom where sex education is taught. I would be interested in having a discussion with the students. (I do not speak French) I have my doctorate in nursing with a focus on the prevention of teenage pregnancy, and would love to explore the reasons why the teenage pregnancy rates are so low in France. Is there a school nurse in Paris that would be able to help me arrange this? thank, Kathleen Haley :balloons:

Hi Kathleen,

It is very interesting to have a discussion with studens in a nurse school in France, for you and for students too !

But I think it is not realy easy, and you don't speak French !!!

You can try to mail to the "Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris" service formation here : "bad information"

you can send a mail on "contact secretariat".

AP-HP have 19 nurse schools (IFSI) and some speciality schools.

Good luck.

Fred

Fred,

Think that she is looking more at what is taught in the public schools to the students as far as sex education. In the US, it is usually done by the school nurse. She is wishing to meet up with a nurse that works in the school system and helps children that get sick when they are in school, or need medication when they are in school.

Thank you.

i guess you only focus on paris. however, here is a link with contacts in the haute-savoie region.

Sorry I have not understand, I mistake school for nurses and the nurse of the school. It will be more difficult. I see nothing on the web in Paris.

You can see on the "pages jaunes" adress and phones of school http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/ciweb2g-pagesjaunes//RecherchePagesJaunes.do?langue=en

In France "college" is for students from 11 to 14 years old and "lycee" for students from 15 to 17/18 years old.

You can try to send a fax to explain what you need.

Usualy there is only one nurse for one or two schools, and perhaps a teacher of English can help you to translate.

Good luck

Fred

Thank you for the updated information.

Hi

I worked in France for over 2 years. In schools sex education is included in the curriculum of both college and lycee and is taught by teachers, not nurses. School nurses are there to give first aid, lifesytle advice etc, but dont have formal teaching sessions as such. Pupils will go to them on a need basis only. They can also give out emergency contraception. France in general are pretty open and comfortable dealing with sexuality, this combined with the easy availabilty of emergency contraception to teens may be why the teen pregnancy rate is low. Also I would strongly advise you to learn at least some French before you go over there. It will be difficult to get much valuable information if you dont speak French. There are the international schools that have English speaking pupils, but your average French child will not speak good enough English for you to be able to fully understand them. Teen pregnancy rates in France are certainly lower than in the US, but if you want to see a pretty amazing approach to this then I would advise you go to the Netherlands. Good luck
