New RN in Sweden and wants to relocate to an English speaking country.

Hi!

Am a new registered nurse and after grad started working at an oncology unit/department where we take care of cancer patients...

For the past 4mnths I keep thinking about moving out of Sweden to practice elsewhere. What are the requirements for relocation to an English speaking country to continue my practice?

Here in Sweden, nursing program is 3yrs and you get a BSc if studied in the university.

Specializes in Oncology, ID, Hepatology, Occy Health.

I would repeat the advice I have given here to other new grads saying they want to work abroad: get at least a year or two's experience in your home country first. After that - go for it.

Changing country is hard: different ways of working, different perceptions of the rôle of the nurse, different terminology, different procedures etc. I did it after 15 years qualified and it was still a mighty big adjustment. However, extremely rewarding and well worth doing, but you'll find it more difficult as a new grad. With a bit of experience behind you first - the world's your oyster as they say.

When I worked in the UK in the 90s we had a wave of recruitment from Sweden. Swedish nurses were well received for their level of skills and competence.

Always get your advice from the regulatory body of the country you want to work in. So for example, for the UK The Nursing & Midwifery Council, for Ireland the NMBI, for Singapore the Singapore Nursing Board etc. You'll find these organisations with a quick Google search. Always get your information from these official sources.

Thank you so much for the advice! I will keep working to gain more experience...
