I have been interested in starting a foot care service for some time now and after reading posts from LoisJean feel this is something I can do. I would like to start out by receiving some kind of training but cannot find anyone who provides this type of course.

I have been in touch with LoisJean who has given me wonderful information about becoming an independent provider performing foot/nail care however I would like to take a course of some description to make myself more prefessional. I found a course titled "Foot & Nail care for Nurses" which sounds absolutely perfect but it is Wisconsin and I live in New York, I cannot find anything else closer to home.

If anyone has crossed this bridge already and can offer any advice I would be extremely grateful.

I googled, "20-minute Chemosterilant", and found a few links to this. Looks like the manufacturer is out of Ontario, but have subsidiaries in the states, so you should be able to purchase here. I found price around $59.00.

I am an operating room nurse who wants desparately to do something different! Even I do this 2 days a week and keep my other job it would give me a break sway from what I am doing I thought of this because my 92 yr old mother is in assisted and they really have no one to do foot care and maintainence. The podiatrist that comes to her place cut her 5th to the last time and she was in pain for weeks! This is a service that is not readily available in my opinion. Does any one know of a good class in order to get certified after some practical experience. I found one in St John New Brunswick Canada (Foot Care Management) it has 3 days of classroom and 2 days of clinincal it seems pretty comprehensive. Did you dind it easy to get a business started? Was it expensive to get equipment and supplies? Anyone know of any classes in U.S that are good? Seems like Canada might be up on us in the # of classes they have and the importance they place in this service but I'm not sure I may not have the whole picture. Any info is appreciated!!:up:

I already run a small foot care practice in lafayette, LA

The certification web site has example questions and areas of testing...it is pretty comprehensive....and alot of information.

I think we will have to do a lot of out side studying to pass the exam.

I am getting the book:

Foot Care for Salon Professionals by Dr. Oscar Mixx

It was recommended in this thread.

I have found a couple of training places but they seem more hands on and less didactic in nature. I am interested in the 5 day course as well.

need to look further into this.

Do podiatrist make house calls in your area?

Senior centers and assisted living facilities are places to get your foot in the door. I have started advertizing in a senior paper and am already getting phone calls.

Hello all,

Regarding the Foot Care Certification , I looked long and hard for a course that was practical as well as thourough and would apply for certification. I was fortunate to find one at a college here which is online until the clinical weekend, it is the most complete, lasts 5 months online with a 20 hour clinical at the end for new Foot Care Nurses and a 6 hour clinical for practicing Foot Care Nurses. There were nurses from all over Canada and the US at the clinical and all were saying it was the most complete offered. For my experience it was the best option and a great way to network with others to improve practice.

I also evaluated the chemical sterilant vs. the autoclave and decided the cost of the autoclave was actually better than the cost of the liquid alternative in an ongoing business practice, so you may want to look closely at that options in your area. My understanding is there are going to be more changes to the sterilizing standards in the next several months so those could also affect practice choices.

Thanks for the information. Are you located in Canada? Also where is the class located and how do you go about signing up for it in order to get the prerequisite information to study? I am reviewing all lmy options as far as how comprehensive the classes are and how easy the location is for me to get to. Any info you might be able to give is appreciated! Thanks

The Foot Care Certificate Course is through St. Lawrence College in Kingston Ontario and the instructor is the President of Foot Care Canada. I am registered in Minnesota and Ontario so I needed a certificate program that could qualify in both countries and this is it. It is 180 hours long in total and included a fantasic module on how to set up your own business, considerations and costs, diabetic Foot Care, gait assessments, orthotics overview, high risk assessments, risk assessments for falls and ulcers and much more. The group I was with included LPN, RPN, RN and N.P..
