I have been interested in starting a foot care service for some time now and after reading posts from LoisJean feel this is something I can do. I would like to start out by receiving some kind of training but cannot find anyone who provides this type of course.

I have been in touch with LoisJean who has given me wonderful information about becoming an independent provider performing foot/nail care however I would like to take a course of some description to make myself more prefessional. I found a course titled "Foot & Nail care for Nurses" which sounds absolutely perfect but it is Wisconsin and I live in New York, I cannot find anything else closer to home.

If anyone has crossed this bridge already and can offer any advice I would be extremely grateful.

Hi footcare nurses! I'm living in Maine and really want to set up my own business as a foot care nurse. My question is are there any courses in the US for this and also how do we get reimbursed? What about medicare etc. HELPPP! thanks, reely.

I attended a foot care training class in Seattle, WA about four years ago, put on by the Podiatrist Association. It was a two day class, and included the name and address of all the Podiatrists in Washington State, so if we reall wanted to pursue this, we had names of doctors who we could contact for an intership, of sorts.

I did not bother to pursue it because there is alot of equipment that you have to buy- nailclippers, sterilization equipment, etc, and I did not want to buy them at the time.

I would contact the Podiatrist Association in your state, and ask where you can get a training program. Hope that helps.

Vancouver Commuity College has a course, it has a level one and 2 programme.

I found a new site, I imagine the individual, since she lives in the states, can help you with foot care courses. The site can be searched under the Preventitive Foot Care Alliance, in google. From there it is also linked to http://www.barefootnurses.com. It is based in California.:up:

Thanks everyone for the info. I am having a heck of a time getting info from Medicare about reimbursement/getting a # etc. I'm going to keep trying and will let you all know anything I find out. reely

I was unable to work with medicare...even when I was working thru a home care company...it would not work out...so my practice is all private pay.

I live in louisiana...wonder if other nurses are billing medicare?

Unfortunately, RN's can't bill medicare/medicaid or private insurances, we have to be advanced practice ( nurse practitioner) in order to receive a provider #. I found this out from my board of nursing and I live in Mississippi.

Hey fellow nurses,

I just joined this site and have been reading several different posts. It was really strange that I found this site because I am a Wound Care Certified nurse who is thinking about opening a foot care business for private pay. Any ideas or suggestions? I currently have an LLC Wound Care Consulting business and I am thinking about venturing further out to help a lot of my little patients who just can't find anyone to cut their toenails and help check their feet for problems. I do this all the time for free and thought, Why not add it to my current business. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I found this site by Googling foot care nursing. I have been thinking about where I would like my career to go in the next 5 years. I have most of my nursing experience in home care and I realized that I really like doing foot care. Just something about a neat completed task that gets me revved. I would like to start out doing foot care privately, part time until I can become certified and build up clientele. Does anyone have experience in starting out? If so, is there any advice with where I should start?

It may take a while but I suggest you read thru this entire thread if you have not done so already.

Start researching your state RN scope of practice, there may be directives in place as far as your particular educational requirements and guidelines...

there are different ways to obtain training, through schools, individual training, there is a certification process as well.

Great to see you and wonderful that you already have your own business!

Adding on foot care to your practice should be quite simple.

You need to check with your state board of nursing for there may already be directives in place for foot care.

also read thru this entire thread if you have not done so already.
