Foot care training

I have been interested in starting a foot care service for some time now and after reading posts from LoisJean feel this is something I can do. I would like to start out by receiving some kind of training but cannot find anyone who provides this type of course.

I have been in touch with LoisJean who has given me wonderful information about becoming an independent provider performing foot/nail care however I would like to take a course of some description to make myself more prefessional. I found a course titled "Foot & Nail care for Nurses" which sounds absolutely perfect but it is Wisconsin and I live in New York, I cannot find anything else closer to home.

If anyone has crossed this bridge already and can offer any advice I would be extremely grateful.

In order for me to find training in which to become certified (in Canada) I looked in the yellow pages of my phonebook and looked under Nursing Services which offers FootCare. I found an accredited national agency which offers foot care services. I contacted them and inquired if they offer training, which they did The course is an Advanced & Diabetic Foot Care Course,which a certificate is issued after completion of the 5 days,and writing an exam. The course is very detailed,and well presented. I have no regrets,and would encourage anyone to further persue taking this course.

I had the option to pay for the course,or sign a contract with them for 1 year of employment, and they absorbed the cost of the course. I signed the contract,as I felt it would be benificial to have others to refer to if I had questions,and or needed direction.

The course was 5 long days, but well worth every minute. I began holding clinics the very next week.Most clinics have 10 appts. per day...each lasting 45 minutes. I now have 15 clinics per month,approx 60 home clients,and also do approx 100 residents at a local nursing home. I have been so blessed with so many wonderful clients...it has been a very positive experience. In closing, requirements for this course is LPN/RPN or RN.

In the usa we have been getting organized, The certification exam/process began only 3 years ago.(many years of hard work went into that for sure)

I wonder how many RN's have been certified now.

Does anyone know a ball park number?

There are only a handful of training classes available in different parts of the country and it is hard to know which one would be the best one to help prepare you for the exam. It would be nice if it were standardized.

Some courses look more hands on training than others.

Since I don't have an office and I travel to patients homes, I would like to correspond with other foot care nurses who travel and discuss those particular challenges being mobile.

What sanitizing solutions do you use for your instruments?

I use barbicide plus, it is purple and stains everything!

It takes 10 minutes and is safe on my foot files too.

I live in lafayette louisiana.

I am self employed, have run a small foot care practice for 10 years.

Have about 100 clients in ecf's and private homes.

THankfully my husband teaches at the unniversity and carries our benefits, insurance.

It is my desire to restart this thread and invite other foot care nurses to net work and share their stories here. Becoming a foot care nurse is a needed profession and we need more of them...our society is simply getting older and older.

I hope that we will be allowed to share ideas and information as that is what this site is about.

Very good idea. Sharing stories and supporting each other here in this thread is a great idea, bizi. We as nurse entrepreneurs can learn from each other!!!

Barbicide is a disinfectant. Each instrument that is used on a client/patient needs to have been sterilized..... by whatever method you choose, liquid, dry heat, or autoclave. Disinfectants are not good enough. You will miss this question on the certification exam!

It kills HIV, Staph, Strep, the list goes on and on.

they have been regulated and liscensed for such care for a very long time?
