Hi. I am in FNP school now. I don't have any peds or ER experience. Do you think I can workin in ER or urgent care setting?

Mine is not a stand alone. It is part of a hospital. I would be very nervous working for a corp. that is "4-5 docs down". Why is that? Perhaps there is a lot of unhappiness, or the workload is too great for 1 provider. I would burn out very quickly if I was working alone and had to see 40 to 50 patients a shift. I think that is an unrealistic work load. I would speak to a provider that works in that clinic about the realities before I would take a job there....

How much and what kind of RN experience do you have to help assess/treat and street the small stuff?
I agree with Tracey...I would be cautious of a corporation that is that many MD's down
The corporation is down 4 - 5 docs or so I was told.
Big problem right there.
1. Who is going to support and train you when they are short that many providers?
2. Are they going to let you have a full orientation if they are down that many providers?
3. Are they going to let you slowly ramp up your schedule?
4. Why are they down that many providers?
I would want solid plans/answers to these before even considering the position.

I am an experienced RN, but a new FNP. The red flags just keep popping up about this corporation. Yes, the money is there, but money is not worth risking my professional career and investment (family and personal). My gut says something is wrong and I am listening!

Did you work alone or was there another NP/MD/PA on the shift with you when you started as a New Grad NP?
Hi alfnp,
I was wondering did you take the position in the urgent care as a New Grad NP? If so, was it too overwhelming? Was there other providers on the shift or did you have to work solo?
