I’ve heard that psych NP’s have the best job prospects.

I have no solid numbers on this -- so grain of salt -- what I am about to say is based on anecdotal observation.
I believe we are in a new era of unprecedented mental health crisis. Psychiatry, it would seem, is not a sexy specialty -- so few providers! So, if I were looking to become an APRN provider with the most money making potential and long-term job security-- I'd choose PMHNP.

Please don't choose PMHNP just for the money. Choose what you are most interested in. Psych is not easy and many people can't handle it. Yes, we have a shortage of mental health professionals, but the last thing we need are providers who are only in it for the money. If you are not suited for psych, you will not last and will doing a disservice to your patients. In the Western US, we have a shortage of primary care providers everywhere except in the big coastal cities. I strongly advise anyone considering psych to get some serious exposure to working with the mentally ill before committing to a PMHNP.
