Florida Roll Call ......

Published

Ok - who are you, what do you do, where abouts in Florida do you live (or if you are not in Floirda, what part of Florida do you want to move too), what is your clinical area, you status (CNA, LPN, RN, Student, Whatever) and anything else you might want to add.

Some of you already know me, I lived in Florida for a little over 20 years. An RN, I worked and lived in Sarasota. Went to nursing school at Manatee Community College and also University of South Florida at Sarasota. Great place .... love the beaches and the area is truly a wonderful place. I generally work surgical recovery and while in Florida, I worked in post open heart step down and also worked as a nurse manager.

I am a single dad raising three children (all are now teenagers - whew is this rough!). They are really great kids and I am a very luck father to have them. :uhoh3:

Hi Indy - Arcadia is a long way from anywhere! I think there's some sort of hospital out that way as someone I knew took a job out there - but that was a long time ago and I can't remember specifics. Unions down here are slim to none. HCA/Columbia facilities - well, they're private, for-profit, and in my experience pay and staff pretty poorly. They've also been involved in some medicare troubles due to billing and financial irregularities. Good luck in your move.

Hello, my name is Shannon. I live in southern Brevard County (Palm Bay), but work for Orlando Regional Healthcare Systems. I work Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, but will soon work at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies (it opens May 30th)!! I will be a GN in Labor and Delivery!! I can't wait!

I have 3 beautiful children, and my boyfriend has a great lookin' girlfriend (haha)!

I love it here in Florida, and will probably never leave!

Hi,

I'm knew to this site and saw you worked at winnie palmer in orlando, FL. As of now, I'm working in MA as a RN on a med-surg floor. I'm planning to move to Florida in September and was really interested in winnie palmer hospital. I saw online that they have positions open for the mother/baby unit. How is this unit? and are they willing to train somebody with no prior experience in this specialty. I appreciate any information you can give me as I'm in the process of getting my Florida license. Thanks, Katie

Specializes in ER/ medical telemetry.

hello,

i reside in north port fl. i work in venice (next town over).

the hospital i work at is one that i have been at since 1991.

it is so nice knowing everyone, and it helps to have friends.

i am a new rn grad june of this year.

my new position has been an exciting one.

i work in the ed, which i can say can be challenging to a new grad;

but because i have a repore with many of my co-workers

it takes off about 75% of the pressure.

i love florida

i have been here since 1989.

it has opened up many doors for me.

wild life is great,

boating fishing and vacationing within the state is an advantage.

only complaint i have;

are the rates of pay that many rn's are having to deal with.

Specializes in ER/ medical telemetry.

i work at that venice hospital mentioned, and it is called venice regional medical center, formerly known as bon secours.

it is owned by hma now. they have upgraded many things in the hospital in the past 3 years.

it is a 325 bed hospital,

has a great heart program ( 3rd floor dedicated to just telemetry).cath unit above er for emergency caths, and a regular cath facility across the street.

er has 24 rooms with great dr's. with reg er and fast-track.

ortho unit (2 north) completly remodeled with private rooms.

they also have an excellent ortho program.

they have a acu on the 2nd floor

of course surgery(gen surg, and heart surg).

on the main floor they have easy street (rehab) very cute, and of course rehab , throughout the hospital. xray, ultrasound, and administration on 1st floor and er mentioned above.

they have reembursment for education, and health care insurance is ok.

it is smaller but has a small town friendly atmosphere.

a great place to find new nursing friends.

i like it...

hi indyrn,

in sarasota, i believe there are only two hospitals: sarasota memorial is city-owned, pretty large, with a good heart program. i've heard "it's a rough place to work," but that was years ago, and i've never worked there so i don't know. when i visited people in that hospital, however, i was impressed with how clean and upscale it is - sarasota is full of retirees with money and it shows. the other hospital is doctors, which is a new building out in east sarasota. it's owned by hca, (also known as columbia). they're private and after working at a couple of hca faciliites, i won't do it again - the only focus seems to be the almighty dollar. up the road in bradenton is manatee memorial, where i worked for a few years. used to be county, now private. also blake is in bradenton and its an hca facility - been there, done that, won't do it again. south of sarasota is the town of venice - there is a hospital there, bon secours (?), and i think it's also hca and little. so if you like surgery, look to sarasota - or else come to tampa general - we're over 800 beds, and university-affiliated. whew, that's a lot! hope you find at least some of this information useful, kayaknurse.

I am a Graduate Nurse working in at St Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa. I just took my NCLEX yesterday and am awaiting the results. I hope I can finally join the RN family! :)

Cassie,

Good luck with your pre-reqs. I am a PCT at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. I am in the ADN program at SJRCC and I graduate this December. I am also the President of the SJRCC FNSA Chapter. The Florida Nursing Students Association. When you get a chance, see if you have a chapter of FNSA at DBCC. This is a great organization and most chapters provide mentoring, as well as the opportunity to participate in community service and awareness programs. Check it out.. Good Luck!!!!!! Ron G.
