My guess is that the reasoning is if votes are counted ahead of time there is the potential that results could be released early.

Seems unlikely.  But, then again we had passwords to voting machines posted online for a week or two.  So, who knows?

That was my guess.  Hasn't seemed to happen but hackers have become very sophisticated as time goes by.  On the pro-side, my county has reported 92% of its votes and the polls shut down 55 minutes ago.  (Trump won)
