Florida LPN school?

Just curious. I want to start LPN school but so far the only one in Orlando is Orlando Tech in Downtown. Does any one know of any other LPN schools that are only 1 year to 18 months?

Hi Everyone, Im glad that these type of websites exist. This is a great way of communicating with people that have sort of the same similarities. Well Im from Miami, Fl and I wanted to start the LPN program because I have had a very hard time applying for the Acclerated RN Prgm, not enough avaiable seats!

I decided that altough I have a BA in Health Administration that I was going to pursue my LPN, and than it should be way easier to get in the RN program. I had previously completed all the Pre-req i.e, Anatome, Microbilogy, Chemistry, and Human Deve., but this is the best route so far. Since Im not originally from FL Im from NYC, which moved out here about 3 months ago, I decided to enroll at Medvance Institute for the LPN :nurse: prgm.

Is there anyone that can let me know anything they have heard of that school? Its 16 months. Also wanted to know the pay salary for LPNs in FL.

I am a public school teacher in Orlando and I want to make the transition to pediatric nursing. I love working with kids but my current teaching job has just taken over my life. Unfortunately I cannot afford to quit my job to go to school, so it limits my options somewhat. I would like to do the online accelerated LPN to RN track at Valencia that you described, but I need to get the LPN first.

I called Orlando Tech the other day and they told me the next evening LPN program starts in August of 2007. They left a voice mail for me and said that it is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays! For 18 months.

I was shocked when they said that. Am I understanding that correctly? Five hours of school, four nights a week? As a teacher who already takes home papers to grade and lessons, I am wondering how I could possibly do that. Fortunately I am single with no kids, so I don't have to be home for anyone.... but still.

Does anyone know of any online LPN programs? I am really eager to get started on this, but I am wondering how anyone could possibly work full time and then go to five hours of school, four nights a week.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how a full time working person can get an LPN degree in the Orlando area?

Hey, busylady61!! Unfortunately the part time LPN programs that i know of here in Orlando and surrounding cities that offer part time programs have those hours around the same days of the week. you gotta remember that with a full time LPN program you are going to school 5 days a week for 8 hours, so they have to cram all that info somewhere. I don't know of any online LPN program, but since you already have your bachelor's, i would suggest either checkin out UCF's accelerated program (i think it's part time) or maybe even just going for your RN's online. There may be an online LPN program out there, but i don't know of one. The school that i went to for LPN had their classes on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and clinicals on Saturday, but that program was discontinued. I would just do a google search! Can I still get financial help with school if I am married? We aren't rich but we only make enough to just get by at this time.

you can, depending on income. I would check with Workforce Central FL to see if they have any programs to help with people going into a second career, displaced workers, moms going into the workforce, etc. You would be suprised, they may have a program u can qualify for.

You could also try to get a job as a CNA (some places offer free classes if u agree to work for them), and possibly your employer would offer tuition reimbursement so you could get it covered that way.

Also, if you go to Seminole Comm College for your LPN, u could get student loans for sure. Tech schools dont offer student loans but community colleges do (tech schools probably had too many ppl default on loans). The only thing is there are a couple of pre reqs for SCC's program. And it only starts once a year in February. The good news is you have plenty of time to get the pre reqs out of the way (they are easy, one is medical terminology and I think intro to health care is the other). Also, the other good thing is the way they choose is first come first serve so what u would have to do is find out when the application period is and seriously camp out at the crack of dawn to get ur app in so u will be one of the first to get in. They take 55 I believe. I was going to go there but something happened with my transcripts and although I got my app in early enough, they threw it out bc they didnt have all my credits on file :( So I ended up going to Orlando tech in the fall instead of waiting till the next february.

try the distance learning forum on here...I remember I spoke with someone who said they did an LPN program online (I believe it was thru deaconess who I believe changed their name since). Just be aware Im sure it is wayyyy more expensive. Orlando tech was only a little over 3k. Im sure it would cost somewhere around 15k-20k for the online program.

You should definitely look into the accelerated BSN at UCF since u already have a degree. That would be my first choice if I were u. You would have your BSN more quickly than you could get your LPN this route. good luck!

Thank you so much for your replies! I had never even considered going straight for a BSN.... I will look into UCF right away. The reason I was thinking of going LPN first was because I thought it would be the cheapest, fastest way to get my toe in the door as an entry level nurse. My idea was... get the LPN degree, then go to work for a hospital and then the hospital would help me out with my tuition as I continue my studies. I would imagine they have tuition reimbursement for employees.

I am so excited that I have found this forum. I don't personally know any nurses or nursing students so it is truly a help to have found a community of people who are all on the same journey!

:o :o In my case, I decided to take the LPN, because at this time there are so many students who are trying to get in the RN accelerated program here in miami. It is so ridiculous w/ the demand that is out there for Nurses.

Alot of theses students usually do it for the money but not because they will enjoy there Jobs. Too me personality counts alot, in a Nurse. :lol2:

There are many Nurses in the hospital that mistreat patients, and that is something that the board should really take into consideration. All these entrance exams and waiting list is really bad because the ones that end up hurt are we the student who really love this career!:o

But yes I tried to apply for the Accelerated program but Im still waiting. It won't start until August 2007 at Miami Dade (med campus) I also applied to University of Miami Accelerated program but nothing yet. I have a BA, AS and 2 years of biology which are all the requirements for the Nursing Program. But nothing yet. This can be very frustrating. I even sweared that if excepted I would quit my FT/ Job to go PT to work to finish faster w/ Nursing. ;)

Not so long ago I also went and applyed to a school called MEDVANCE INSTITUTE in Miami, where they are offering the LPN Program tuition is pretty expensive but at the same time not that bad. Its $24,000, includes Scrubs, equipments, books, and the Board exam to be licensed at the end of the program. It is 16 months, but what caught my eye was that I can just sit around and wait to theses are schools call me. I rather do the LPN and than go back to school for 9 months in the RN program and either complete it online or in school, but let the hospital pay for it. At least if I do it that way I will still be a NUrse and with knowledge on what to expect. The LPN get less hassle to get in the RN program as long as u are a NUrse its great. Its called the Bridge for RN at Miami dade college. Than tuition is really cheap there.

The LPN program before even enrolling you have to take the NLN-entrance exam, and pass it with a 40 percentile, I got a 53. Its not that hard except for the Science kind of tricky.

So I want to which all of you luck, and I am so glad these websites excist becuz at leats we are able to network, thats is so awesome! Also I want to scoop you up on the Forgiveness prgram they have for tuition reimbursement you can check that out at board of nursing for FL. You work for the hospital they have listed and they give you 4,000.00 every yr to pay back your nursing loans.

Well, I went to the University of Central Fla. web site and looked at their info about the accelerated BSN RN degree for people like me who already have a bachelor's in another subject. From the looks of the course schedule posted online, it looks like the program is offered during the daytime (15 or so credits each in the fall and the spring). Because I work full time, I can only take classes at night. So that won't work for me.

So now I am back to square one again. I've looked at the Excelsior website and they have an online RN program but I am nervous about the idea of doing it all from home online. I feel, especially as a beginner, I need class time with other people.

Gosh I just don't know what to do, short of selling my house and taking the profits to go to school full-time for a year. And I really don't want to do that. Maybe I will try to bite the bullet and do the evening LPN program at Orlando Tech. It is only $3,000 and five minutes from my house. But trust me, going to school four nights a week from 4 to 9 p.m. is going to be pretty funky while working full time as a teacher. Hmm...there has got to be a better way.

I have also sent emails to Valencia and Seminole Community Colleges to find out if they offer LPN classes in the evening.

Well anyway, thanks to everyone for their responses.

This board is a God-send. I have been doing all kinds of research online for several weeks, and I feel I have learned more from reading these forums the past few days, than from my other research.

Currently I am earning $36k as a public school teacher. Does anyone know what beginning LPNs make in the Orlando metro area?

P.P.S -- Also, one other question to Luv4Nursing (since you went through the Orlando Tech program). They said it is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Is there a dinner break? Do they always go straight through to 9 p.m. or did they ever try to get out a little early, like by 8:30 p.m.?

We are just taking over the board lol :)

I believe that most of the time they get out early, for example we were supposed to get out at 3 but we always got out at 2:30. Also you should get a dinner break Im sure.

PS, dont worry about the pay cut....I work 40+ hrs a week but I make more than my friend who is a teacher, so it should be no problem to work as an LPN while u get ur RN. You should make equal if not more.

Could you maybe get a roommate for a year? DONT sell ur house please! That is one of the best investments you can make...I wish I already owned but I will definitely be buying when I finish school.
