hi, i am just starting in my first semesta at uni and for my foundation nursing skills assessment, i need to write a essay that outlines a risk assessment in relation to maintaining skin integrity, (from a pationt example given)and then discuss stratagies to prevent pressure ulcers. the problem is i need to use at least 10 references, 7 of which need to be journal articles, but i dont really know what to look for, and where to search.
any help, or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated, thanks

The main referrence database for nursing is one called CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health). You should have CINAHL on your library computer at Uni. You are far more likely to get a good journal article from CINAHL than from Medline or just Googling it. The other site to visit is JBI or the Joanna Briggs institute for evidence based practice - I KNOW that they have a statement on pressure area management.
thanks so much for the info, it gives me somewhere to start my search. much appreciated, kj

Hi welcome to life as a student, you will love it, it is so challenging, interesting and fun
What uni are you going too? Your 1st essay sounds the same as mine was.
The uni should have a database of journals for you to use and should also teach you how to use them to your best advantage.
If you can find it (maybe in your library) I found a video that was really good, and had a lot of information that I could use in my essay.
Skin care & skin integrity for Australian Aged Care Facilities, 2004, VHS, Working Pictures, Moonee Ponds.
I actually have a list of 8 references in all if you need them, however one of the things that they are trying to teach you in the first semester is how to research properly and find the info that you need.
So if you get stuck and need them, just send me a msg and i will be glad to help out.
Good luck and enjoy

Another tip would be to simply google the main names associated with pressure area risk assessment - that is waterlow and norton. Remember though, Google works on the most popular or most visited sites and sometimes you get a better result on scientific research if you use an alternative search engine such as alta vista.
Remember though - using ANYTHING from the JBI website should earn you molto brownie points as it is THE nursing site for evidence based practice in Australia. JBI also has some awesome links.
Here is JBI's "Best Practice" list which includes the Pressure area risk Assessment

You could also try Google Scholar: http://scholar.google.com/
It finds journal articles, not just webpages. The only problem is, it often links to sites where you need to be a subscriber to access the full-text article. But it's useful to find articles initially, and then you can try and access them via your uni library/databases.

When I was doing my degree I used the following databases ; proquest nursing, and swetwise alot. Use the database directory through your university, at Griffith, we could link up using a program to the university database and search it from home. Good luck...............

Hi,
I'm a first year too and it's also my 2nd week of Uni, first week for me was pretty good a lot of introduction stuff. this weeks going to be getting right into it. I've got a few essays but most of them aren't due for a few weeks.
The hardest thing I think about this year, is not the Nursing stuff itself but learning how to read effectively, take good study notes and write good essays.
It's been a while since I was at school and all the studies a little overwhelming, but other than that so far so good. I've decided to take one moment at a time and that's making it easier.

I'd have a look at the sites Gwenith and the others in earlier postings mentioned for a start and type in such things in google as therapeutic and healing touch, non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills, mirroring (and getting your messages across without words) just as examples. Good luck. I really miss the assignments. No I am not kidding.

CINAHL (cia Ovid) & Proquest are great databases, and Blackwell Synergy usually has some good stuff as well. Your library website will let you access these via a signin option. As I research from my home computer, I find it easiest just to search for for full-text only, saves me the bother of having to go to the library to get copies of journals.
