Work and Nursing School - is it possible?

Hi,

I am a pre-nursing student and am thinking of applying to National University to do the Accelerated BSN program. I emailed the nursing adviser asking whether full time employment and school is doable. He stated they highly recommend cutting down working hours dramatically or not working at all if possible. I was wondering if anyone who attended National worked while in school. If yes, how many hours can you reasonably work and still do well in school? Obviously I understand that everyone has different abilities and life situations. I currently work full time (8 to 5) and have a 19 month old son at home. And after work I run straight to school where I take my prerequisites. So, I have a pretty busy life now.... THANK YOU! :pumpiron:

I didn't attend that university, but I worked full-time while attending school full-time. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but I had no choice and survived. Although looking back, I wonder how...

Would you consider working at a local hospital while in school? Most managers are very good about working with student employees, even scheduling for split shifts or special hours to accommodate their schooling.

I would consider working in the hospital. Only I don't have any experience. I have been working for financial and insurance industries all this time. Do you think they will want me? And even if they do, I wonder how much they will pay me?

I worked 20-30 hours/week while in nursing school. It if definitely doable. I second the opinion of one poster who suggested working in a hospital if possible. I worked as a nurse tech and got invaluable experience.

Of course, having a 19 month year old at home is a different story and not something I had to contend with.

I think at the end of the day, you do what you have to. If you want it bad enough it will happen. Good luck!
