First 5 months facing disciplinary action

Published

So I recently worked on my first night shift,on a very busy ward which is low on staffing.I worked with another nurse who is experienced however she was just doing agency. At the end of my shift on my way home I was called back in to work to speak to HR in regards to complaints of patients saying they dont remember having vital signs obtained.Hence it appeared as though I had falsified the vital signs.I was called in without my manager or a union represenentive ,pending investigation.

I love the job and I have had no previous issues as a student or since being qualified. The way this complaint and the thought of being suspended has been so depressing and the uncertainty of my future worrying.

My concerns now are if I will be struck off the register?

Will I be fired?

Will I ever be able to work as a nurse?

Should I just give up the career and find something else to do with my degree?

Did you do the vital signs?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Why wouldn't they let you have representation?

Specializes in Advanced Practice, surgery.

Take a deep breath.

It is not unusual to have that initial discussion with your manager without union representation, it is a fact finding process to see if there is any foundation to what has been alleged.

Suspension is usually last resort, you may be asked to work supervised unless there is a real concern you have put patients at risk and will continue to o so.

As far as your other questions.

Difficult to answer without knowing some facts.

If you have done nothing wrong then you should be fine, just be honest.

But as the previous poster asked, is there any basis to the complaint?

If so, and I would urge honesty then there will be a formal investigation to establish if there is a case to answer, if it is found there is honesty is your best option.

If you have been recording observations without actually taking them then this is serious, your best option is to hold your hands up, reflect and show you are determined to change your practice.

I can understand the manager talking to them about this but if you read their post again they say they was called in my HR and spoken to without the manager present. That is what I think is odd. I would have thought manager would be first port of call in something like this? I was when I worked in the UK

Yes the observations were performed and written down on paper then I transferred them on to the computer ,in view of other staff member however they have still suspended me as they have not spoken to anyone else I worked with that day.I am so confused as to whether I need an employment lawyer ,or will I need to resign ?

I have been completely open and honest with them but I am also willing to do anything from shadowing or being monitored closely to improve my practice .I just feel like I want my name cleared and I don't want this to leave a permanent marker on my pin

If you did the observations then why do you need to improve your practice? This would be a ridiculous thing to resign over. Have you been up front with us about other issues? None of this is making sense.

Because my manager and no on else from my ward has spoken to me at all since I was called back.I have felt really alone in the issue. My union rep can't really do anything until they have sent a letter of what the investigation is about.I was only interviewed about the whole shift and asked specifically about the observations but I did not expect to be suspended. In my training or practice I have never been called in for anything so I guess I am just scared by the whole situation because I love being a nurse .it's the one thing I have always wanted to do .

No matter how this turns out, I don't think I would be comfortable working in this environment in the long run. You have now been shown how you are regarded here. It is up to you to act on that information for your own benefit.

That's why I am so devastated because I loved working there and the people ,I got on with everyone I thought. I want to clear my name and I want to move on because if I stay there I don't feel like I can trust anyone I work with ..it is a very lonely feeling .

I'm sorry you're going through this. My suspicion is there is something else afoot that you might not even be aware of. When managers start doing these kind of things it's usually to initiate a "paper trail" in order to have you sacked. If none of your work mates are speaking to you I'd be worried too. I agree with previous posters. Start looking for a new job. Although I am unfamiliar with the disciplinary processes in the U.K. (I'm assuming that's where you are) I highly doubt your employers will go so far as to attempt to get you struck from the registry. I've been in your shoes. It's a terrible place to be.
