First H1N1 Vaccines Will Be Nasal Sprays

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The first U.S. roll-out of vaccines against the new swine flu virus will be 3.4 million doses of MedImmune's nose spray, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday.

The CDC's Dr Jay Butler said the vaccines would be distributed the first week of October.

"Initially we anticipate that 3.4 million doses of vaccine will be available," Butler told a telephone briefing.

"We anticipate being able to start receiving orders for the vaccine by early October," Butler added. The U.S. government is providing the H1N1 vaccine for free to about 90,000 distributors, including doctor's offices, retail chains and state health departments.

"We estimate that the amount of vaccine that will be available will increase through October," Butler said, adding that eventually delivery would rise to about 20 million doses a week.

But nearly all those 3.4 million doses will be of the FluMist nasal spray type, which is not recommended for pregnant women, people over 50 or those with asthma, heart disease or several other problems, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned.

Nonetheless, it will still be possible to vaccinate people in other high-risk groups: health care workers, people caring for infants and healthy young people.

The nasal spray contains a weakened live virus, while injections contain killed and fragmented virus. The spray gives a stronger immune reaction but carries a small risk that the virus will multiply too quickly in people with compromised immunity.

The nasal sprays contain live viruses. Since this is the first vaccine available, it will likely be the one required by those who are mandating it. So much for the "it's only killed viruses" argument. Who wants some live swine flu and preservatives shoved up their nose, raise your hand...

My state and my employer can both take that live virus and shove it up THEIR noses...or anywhere else they choose.

The mandate means nothing to me. I won't be taking it, period.

be aware this stuff contains MSG.....why do they need a flavor enhancing agent in a vaccine??????
