First bad employee evaluation?

Hey everyone..I just had my first bad employee review. I am still a relatively new RN and my charge nurse wrote basically every negative comment that one say about someone. My nurse manager was saying that it was not bad and I got a few dollars in a raise. I know the charge nurse hasn't exactly been friendly to me since day one which I find very unfortunate. My nurse manager kept trying to make me feel better and told me not to worry. I understand in every review that there are negative comments but I would expect positive as well I would think. Or are reviews normally like that? I promise I saw NO positive comments. I just have strong work ethic and hate having that in my record. Any thoughts?

Hey, I am sorry for your situation, but it made me smile because I just had a glowing evaluation, but a teeny tiny raise, not enough to make up for cuts in benefits. Let the negativity roll right off your back and enjoy your raise :-)

I think you are being too hard on yourself; there is always room for improvement.

Did she give any kind of improvement plan? That kind of review isn't very constructive but that may be the charge's style. And that you got a raise says it wasn't actually all bad, that's just what she chose to communicate. Kind of like the person that bemoans your luck when you find a dollar on the street, saying that it's covered in germs and feces.

Focus on 2 of the things she mentioned, and try your best to grow in those areas.

Seriously. Organizations continue to promote people into supervisory positions without providing sufficient (or any) training and development. These clueless people don't know anything about true leadership. They tend to think that 'authority' means ordering people around and telling them what to do. So they focus on 'corrective' feedback, even when it's not really needed. They know nothing about fostering teamwork or creating a positive work environment. Just like he old saying "when the only thing you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail"

Be sure to do some very obvious and specific things that this charge nurse wants you to do - if ms clueless doesn't notice, point it out to her "is this the way you wanted me to line up the trash cans so that they're directly under the hole punch?" Be sure to keep a record - indicating that you are acting on all of her areas of feedback - & pull it out when it is time for your next eval.

Maybe some day you will be lucky enough to have a competent supervisor. Until then, hang in there.

Yes she did the review and put in her feedback on it.
