I just had a horrible experience with an incredibly rude "anonymous" person at the BRN contact us link, after sending them a very kindly worded question via e-mail.
As well I am really ticked off about the fingerprinting requirement that came along with my latest renewal notice---not about the fingerprinting per se, I think that is a WONDERFUL requirement, HOWEVER, I was finger printed by the CA Department of Justice three years ago for a position at my local school district. I have the accession numbers and the clearance numbers in my hand, and as I was so rudely told, there is no facility in place for the BRN, even with my permission, to access the exact same Live-scan information, from the exact same place they expect me to go to now, forwarded to the exact database.
Best of all? On top of the Money we pay for CEU's, and the money we fork over for out License? I have to pay an extra 96 dollars to be fingerprinted again!!!
Yeah, This right after my husband I and I had to take money out of our already dwindling retirement account to keep our family afloat for the next few months.
Nice huh?
Any idea where I should go with this ladies and gents?
The first thing I would like to do is find out who the rude "anonymous" jerk at the BRN is and fwd their e-mails to their superior...but that would only give me a moment of personal satisfaction :angryfire

Wow, with all this efficiency, I just cannot understand how the state budget is such an issue?
Maybe they think your fingerprints have aged?

You got a reply to your email. My emails are unanswered. You do not need to be wasting mental energy on this. Just redo the fingerprinting and go on about getting your employment. Be thankful that you are even getting any kind of response from the board. Some of us have to resort to driving up there in person just to get any kind of response from them at all. I'm expecting to have the security guards called on me when I go.

Well I'm currently employed. It's less the mental energy than the principal of it, and yes, the nearly 100 extra dollars on top of the renewal fee I can ill afford.
Ha! I had no idea a reply from the BRN was so special! Must have caught someone on a "good" (or *****) day ---we traded about 3 back and forths before I said to hell with it!!

I was a special ed teacher, now subbing High School ROP, just finished cna program, waiting to get into an RN program. 2 livescans and it's only February! None of the agencies cooperate. The only satisfaction is that they're now unpaid 2 Friday's a month!!!

It comes down to the fact that if you wish to work under the BRN, then you need to meet their requirements.
What you had done with the LiveScan in the past cannot be used for any other employer. There is a nurse that I work with that has been fingerprinted multiple times for military duty, etc., but she is having to go thru the fingerprinting specific to be used by the BRN.
If it is any consolation, you can take it as a tax deduction.

Did I read this right? $96 to be fingerprinted??? I just got fingerprinted-Live Scan for $25 at my local police dept. I usually have to get fingerprinted SEVERAL times a year-- already did it once in December (for a camp) then again 2 weeks later for Civil Air Patrol!

I think the cost depends on what agency for which you are being fingerprinted. Even though I have done the Live Scan for my LVN license, I had to do it again for a job as a health tech at a school (I believe I did not pay for the Live Scan required by the school system). And I'm sure I'll have to do it again for the BRN when I finish school. All the different agencies do not have a system set up in which they can share information.

Live Scan renewal for Registered Nurse
Updated: March 30, 2009
*Note: Please make sure if the Board of Registered Nursing, DCA (BRN) updated their fees or requirements.
--------------------------------------------------------
REQUIREMENTS: What to bring to a live scan facility.
1. Live Scan form: Either download online or bring the live scan form that you got in the mail from the Board of Registered Nurse. The one in the mail is better. WHY? I've seen live scan forms for registered nurse renewal where the mail code is different. The mail code is how the board of registered nursing check your background clearance from the DOJ and FBI via online. It normally takes 1-3 business days for the BRN to receive the background clearance from DOJ and FBI. The other mail code is 05753. Normally, 05753 mail code is for Registered Nurse Exam and Endorsement - new nurses. So double check if you have the correct mail code. For renewal, I believe 13424 is correct. No problems so far sending to 13424 or 05753 for renewal processing.

2. The background check fees are collected for DOJ and FBI (their location in Sacramento) at the live scan facility. To make you guys feel better, 90% of applicants have to pay the full amount. The professions that don't have to pay the DOJ and FBI fees at the live scan facility are volunteers, doctors, lawyers or if your company pays for the background check fees, normally comes with a six digit billing code on the live scan form.
Fees for Registered Nurse Renewal:
DOJ Background Check Fee $32
FBI Background Check Fee $19
Rolling Fee, normally $20 throughout California.
-----------------------------------------------
That's $71, not $96. $96 is way too high.
3. You need your RN#. Can't process without it.
*Note: Registered Nurses that have been working for a long time have the worst fingerprints because you gals/guys wash your hands a lot. Most nurses barely have fingerprints that are viewable. I would definitely take your fingerprints ASAP. If your fingerprints are rejected by the DOJ and FBI that will delay your application process and you will not be able to work if you don't meet your renewal deadline. This is what other registered nurses have told me.
If you are in Orange County, CA. Here is a live scan facility:
www.costamesalivescan.com or google 'live scan' to find a facility near you.
Good luck.

Sorry but I personally feel that the new finger printing for license renewal is ridiculous! Another way for the government to make money! The FBI and DPS are perfectly capable of doing background checks and some of them FREE! If they show fingerprints on either of them, there is probably a reason. It is already enough money just to renew and keep up the CEU's! Now they want the fingerprinting done as well for who knows how much money........

I did my fingerprints in April of '09 and did not receive my "unreadable" letter until Sept. 07, 2009. I am from out of state and ended up loosing my job because it took so long. I had my fingerprints rolled and personally walked them into the Sacramento office July 22, 2010. I called 8 weeks later and was told that my prints had just been submitted to the DOJ on Sept. 07, 2010. No one would give me an answer as to why they laid around the BRN for 6 weeks until they were sent. In limbo; not working; *****
The CNA whines about nurse-pt ratios but seems like California doesn't really want nurses to move there. I'd be a taxpayer, ya know!!
