i just got most my financial aid info, and I will have grants paying for pretty much this whole fall and spring semester, incld books!!!
I am not sure about summer or next yr, though, as dhs income has increased due to lots of mandatory OT. But gosh, this is such a relief!!! Even at a community college, this stuff adds up quick. And with books, it doesnt matter where you go, they are all the same!

Congradulations! I've been fortunate as well...my cc gave me a Pell, two scholarships and a loan totalling over $5,280 for this first year which will cover tuition, fees, books, uniforms and even some left over for gas. Thankfully the loan amount for the whole year adds up to only $1000...which will be no problem to pay back! I only hope I'll be as fortunate next year.

Congratulations! I Still Cant Get A Student Loan To Save My Life Because They're Based On Need And I Work Two Jobs. Of Course I Would Love To Quit One And Go To School Full Time, But Then I Cant Base Groceries And Gas On Whenever The Govt Decides To Send Me My Check. But Good Luck!!

I got a pell grant, and a loan. In addition my family is helping me out while I am in school which is a big help. I originally didn't think I would be able to afford to go to school, but it's all working out. Good luck!

You could qualify for an unsubsidized Stafford loan, which according to my financial aid office is not based on need. You either pay the interest while in school or it is added to the amount you borrowed once repayment begins. This is how I am paying for school because even though we're making half as much as last year my EFC is almost 7000. :angryfire
I am sure I will need loans next year. Dh is making more this year. We do have 3 kids though, which is why I got the grants. If we didnt have them, I dont think I would have qualified.

That is great!! I am hoping to get a little help at least, but not counting on it. With mine and DH income, I think we make too much (even though I could use the help!)

Like someone else said, the Stafford unsubsidized loans might be good. Or just look around for tons of scholarships, however small they may be. I understand that can be time consuming, but if you spend one hour working on an application for a scholarship and then get the $1000 award, that's the most worthwhile hour of work you've ever done! :wink2:

Can someone perhaps help me with the fin aid maze? I have been given a Stafford loan and need to select a lender. I wanted to use one that my school doesn't have on their standard list but they approved the bank. I went to the bank's website and keep getting these other lenders or are they possibly noting guarranteors? I want to go this taken care of espcially since it looks like it can take a month turn around from the time you submit the form to when you get the money. They just sent the information on Aug 1 and I have been trying to complete the lender info with no luck. I am regretting that I wanted to go with a lender not on the school's normal list but I wanted to have my stafford loan through the same bank I have my mortgage and they sounded like they had a good deal.
I don't know what to do in your situation with the banks. I did a lot of research before I chose a lender, but I went down the list the school gave me. I chose my lender based on many things....they don't sell loans to a 3rd party, there was no origination fee, and they do not charge interest monthly, but instead quarterly so I am not compounding as much. If I were you I would research it, and pick the best lender based on the bank and not just where you have your morg through. When your finished with school you can consolidate all of your loans, and move them to the bank your interested in if you want.
Also if this is your first loan....I was told that you have a thirty day waiting period regardless. In other words you will not get any loan money until 30 days after the first day of class. So don't panic on taking your time finding a good lender.
