Financial Aid Help PLEASE

I am a 25 year old married woman. I would love to become a lpn. I have no children so with only having two people in my household, our income is just over the limit for financial aid. It is my dream to become a nurse and for the first time I feel that I am commited to this dream except that my husband and I can not afford to pay for the tuition on our own. Without financial aid, I am afraid that this will never happen. I currently work at a residential facility in which I care for the mentally disabled. Unfortunately this is a low paying job and they do not do tuition reimbursment. I plan to attend a full time lpn program which i will graduate in ten months. This is the quickest and cheapest way of going about this. Can anyone give me any advice on financial aid, scholarships, grants, anything that could help me with this. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You may be over the limit for Pell Grants, etc, but I would think that you would still qualify for student loans.

Just from your description of your current employment and the LPN program you're interested in, are you in Knox County? If so, I can give you the name and number of the woman who is in charge of the WIA program. They help college students pay for anything college-related.

I am in Perry County. I had a meeting last week with the woman in charge of wia here and the first step is to get accepted to the lpn program and then go from there. She is very nice and willing to help but I know that we are just over the income limit. I will quit my job if I do start schooling because the hours that are available there just won't work with the hours of schooling. So I know that our income will change once I start. This is all just very scarry to me. It takes two incomes around here to make ends meet and even though becoming an lpn will help us in the long run, I'm just afraid that without financial assistance we won't be able to pay for the tuition. I had this same problem. If the school you go to accepts student loans maybe you could qualify for a federaly backed student loan. If not and you have good credit maybe you could get a personal loan or home equity loan with small payments that you could afford while in school. Another thing is some churches will give scholarships for nurses. Some people in my class got all their school paid for and even got 500.00 monthly allowance to be used on anything from a local church. I know you are not in my area but maybe there is something similar in your area. Have you tried talking with the director of the nursing program? They may know of scholarships or other assistance that past students have gotten. Or you may be able to work out a payment plan with the school. Ours school cost around 4000.00 and payments were 400.00 monthly. Also some hospitals and nursing homes will sponsor you to go to school in exchange for you working for them for a specified amoumt of time after graduation. Good luck!!!

I'm curious as to why they said you were not availalbe for financial aid. There are many unsubsidized loans that are NOT need based.

Are you going to be working full time while you are in school? If not, the financial aid officer at the school that you would be attending needs to make an adjustment on your award, and I think this is one of the questions that is asked on the Federal Financial Aid forms.

Pell grants are hard to get if you are married and both are working full time.

You could try and get a job with the local hospital doing anything, transport, unit sec. and they will have tuition reimbursement. You should qualify for student loans if nothing else. I didnt qualify for anything but loans. You can do it, like the admissions lady said, the hard part is getting in not paying for it..:) student loans are easy to get.
