Filipino Nursing Students Thread : Introduce yourself!

Published

Hello there, I want to make a thread where filipino nursing student can meet and know each other. Please introduce yourselves and Ill start!

I am Jenny Gregorio, I am 2nd year nursing student of University of the philippines college of nursing. I am 18 years old. I chose nursing because my family are all in the united states and they want me to become stable when I go there and they say nursing is badly needed in the U.S.

I am currently having the hard time and not performing "that good" maybe because i did not chose the profession myself. there are many issues in our universities about nursing, one of them is the "POOR" standards of UP when it comes to nursing as shown by the poor performance in the board exams.

The school is beaten badly when it comes to topnotchers by Our lady of fatima university, Silliman and UST. I hope that my batch will perform better in the board exams.

how about you? :)

I hope that's good enough to get me into a masteral program a few years from now. I plan to get into a CRNA program after getting a few years of experience at an ICU (preferably a CVICU). My classmates call me crazy for thinking way ahead (like 5 years from now), but hey, it's better to be ready for anything

Hi Justine, I noticed your post and would like to give you kudos for being focused. There's absolutely nothing wrong with what you just wrote. You know what you want and you plan ahead. CRNA is a good choice, nurse anesthetists are rewarded well financially in the US. CRNA programs require full-time commitment for the entire 2-year program so it's impossible to work and go to school at the same time. There are probably a few part-time programs around the US.

By the way, I'm Nick and I'm much older than you guys (37 years old). I am a BSN graduate from the Philippines back in 1991. I have been in the US for 11 years and have worked in a nursing home as well as hospitals in different areas: in-patient rehab, telemetry/step-down, ER, and CVICU. I have a MS degree in nursing at a university here with a nurse practitioner focus. It's also an advanced practice field but of course, different in role than a CRNA. I am currently a nurse practitioner in cardiothoracic surgery at a quaternary hospital with a major cardiac and thoracic surgery program.

Enough of me, the reason why I posted is I would like to give you some advice on applying for graduate school here. Yes, your grades are important as colleges will look at your GPA or grade point average (the total of your grades divided by the credit hours for each of them). For CRNA applicants, schools look at your science grades in particular. They also require that you have at least one year of recent critical care experience in a US hospital. Critical care experience is usally ranked in desirability in the following order: Surgical ICU, combined medical-surgical ICU, medical ICU or coronary care ICU, and last is ER. CVICU counts as surgical ICU. I actually spend a great deal of time managing patients in the CVICU because of my current role. Nurses in CVICU are very proficient in cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring (i.e., arrhythmia treatment, interpreting Swan-Ganz measurements, ACLS meds) and that's one thing CRNA schools look for in applicants.

In terms of examinations there is a possibility that the school will require CGFNS and TOEFL certification since your BSN is from the Philippines. I was required to have these when I applied for my MS in nursing. Lastly, you will have to take the GRE or Graduate Record Examination. This is a 3-part test of vocabulary, mathematical ability, and writing ability. There are minimum required GRE scores for some of the schools I know of but majority of schools look at your whole application and see what strengths you can offer if admitted to the program. Since you are already a junior in your BSN program, 5 years is probably a realistic timeline for achieveing your CRNA goal. Good luck on your BSN and stay focused!

POOR? Wait till you hear about the diploma mills around the country. Here in the US, it does not matter whether you are a graduate of this and that school. What matter the most is that you have your RN license. When you applied for a job, they don't ask what school you came from unlike in the Philippines. There are many competent Filipino nurses from not well-known schools as there are incompetent nurses from well known schools in the Philippines.

Thank you. :)

That means I can't work here to gain experience before I leave... :(

Yes, if you do not have the Philippines License then you can not work there. Take the NCLEX instead and jobs will be waiting for you here. Sure alot of people here will trade palces with you because you are already a US immigrant.

hi, i've seen the title of this thread but never made an effort to totally read what's inside, coz it says for filipino nursing students and i thought i'm not a student anymore hehehe. well don't say that U.P. has 'poor' standards when it comes to nursing. my goodness, last dec06 board exams, i don't know if its true (maybe it was) that the questions about chn were made by u.p. professors because they say you are so good specially when it comes to chn, as to what i've heard from the other examinees. personally, i had a hard time during the exam on the chn part( i dont know about the others who took the exam). the fact that you're from u.p. means that you're really good, you just don't know it yet. maybe you dont feel it now but who knows in the future you'll even top the board exam! yehey! you're lucky to0 coz ur family's in the states already. (i hope we'll get to see each other when i go there - - yeah right.. Ü) :chuckle by the way im from our lady of fatima - lagro too. well, just goodluck and Godbless! ;)
