A similar incident happened about 3-4 years back in NJ at a state facility. Female patient killed a nursing assistant, choked her to death crushed her trachea all over not being able to have a cigarette.
Secondly the attitude of administration is the same everywhere in regard to staff. Example we now have on our unit 2 patients. 1 is schiz paranoid- very delusional & has a long history of violent behavior, but is truely a very ill man. Second is antisocial personality disorder & polysubstance abuse (-) a/v hall. (-)delusions, know exactly what he is doing but doesn't care. Schiz pt. threatens the ward physicial verbally, yells & slams hands on her desk then gives her the finger & says he will kill her if not discharged b/c he is not sick & doesn't need medicine nor hospitalization. What happens to him b/c of this? He has been in 4 leather restraints now going on 24hrs. straight. ASPD idiot threatens to kill a fellow RN right in front of the hospital police all b/c she refuses to alow him to bring his drugs onto the unit when admitted( he was attempting to smuggel them in underneath a big bandage on his leg). Police support the RN & try to have this patient banned from further admission to this facillity. What does administration do? They say nope he can come back any time he wishes & this same RN must continue to work on the floor with this patient, too bad for the RN it is part of her job. We must have eyes on the back of our heads & look out for one another b/c the administrations sure don't give a rats azz about us & our safety.
I totally agree with you that administration does not care what happens to the staff! I too worked in a Max Security Forensic Hospital and even though the staff were getting seriously hurt, administration was still working on a policy to do away with 4 point restraints and seclusion!!!!!!!! And we as nurses had to work our ward no matter what the threats were against us. A client once threatened to rape a stafff member and even though administration knew about it, they did nothing to keep it from happening and the man almost suceeded in raping this staff member. He waited a few weeks before he tried but the point is, admin knew about it and didn't care! Those people who have told you that this anti-social pig can come back anytime he wants to, should have to work with this one patient for 40 hours a week! They sit at their big desks or go to bogus meetings or luncheons and then try to tell us how to do our jobs. I tell you that I really feel for the people that are working at the last job I had because most of them need a job and this is all that they can find right now. But I sure wish they would make a stand and strike for better work conditions and better support from administration etc. Griping and complaining about things isn't going to get them anything. They are going to have to make a huge impact by walking out or calling in for their shift or something. There has got to be some changes in our systems before any more people die from trying to protect society from the criminally insane.
