Female Or Male Ob/gyn- Which Do You Prefer?

Published

Hi,

I have used a male OB/Gyn ever since I started going to see one (oh about 20 years or so). I have never been to a female doctor. I have friends who swear by them. They say only a female doctor could really understand what they are feeling. They would NEVER go to a male doctor. Others (like myself) prefer male doctors. Maybe it's phychological on my part? I don't know why, but the thought of another female poking around in there makes me uncomfortable.

Who do you prefer? Is there really that much of a difference? Are female doctors more sensitive than males? Or is that dependant on the doctor? I thought my male doctor was sensitive, thoughtful and caring. He also had a great sense of humor. Who do you work for?

The reason why I am asking this is I have recently moved. There is an all female practice about 5 minutes away from me. My regular doctor is a good 25 minutes. I don't know if it is worth the switch or just stay with him.

Thanks :)

Jules

I have a practice that is just fabulous! My OB/GYN who is doing my surgery and broke my water with one of my babies, is male. There are two midwives there. Each has delivered one child of mine. I love them all! I was sexually abused as a child and knew that gynecological visits were going to be tough. I have always been open with them and they have always been incredible!

I have had both female and male dr's that I have been uncomfortable with but not my OB/GYN practice.

I have never understood folks who say that a male OB couldn't "understand" what we go through. So what? Is it a requirement for your oncologist to have had cancer?

My gyn is relocating and I am devastated! He is the kindest most gentle physician I have ever seen. He's not bad on the eyes either! :)

So true!

I have a male OB/GYN, and I wouldn't trade him for nothing! There are many female OB/GYN's I dealt with in PP that I would have delivered at home before I let any of them near me or my baby!

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

I could see how someone could say that a male might not understand (not referring to all, here). I have an aunt who suffered with pelvic pain for a year and had 1 male gyn tell her to quit making stories up, another said she needed a shrink, and finally she found (a female doc) who took care of the problem (endometriosis). My aunt swears she'll never go to another male gyn again. Granted she's generalizing that they're all dismissive, but i saw her doubled over in pain several times, and getting dismissed as a head case sometimes sends people in their ways.
