Fed up with the "rules"

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am currently in the float pool at a large metropolitan hospital. Staffing one of their toughest units.

They say they are thrilled to have me, as I can handle the assignment from hell.

Of course, there is no such thing as a break.

Recently the DIRECTOR approached me... I can't wear a white scrub top, not in the dress code.

I can't have a water container at the desk either. Exactly when am I supposed to hydrate myself as I am running up and down the halls, literally wiping sweat off my brow?

Nurses are expected to be super human, look and act professional at all times. Without a break or allowed to sip water.

I don't think animals are allowed to be treated this way, let alone professionals.

i used to have a crusty old charge nurse who would say, if we headed to the bathroom prn,"you make that urine on company time?" she was great.

The docs want to have their coffee with them at nurses' stations, too, and under the current stupid rules, they cannot.

Always amuses me that there is so much concern for a capped water bottle at the nurses' station, but complete disregard for the fact that the nurses have 7 patients each with no free charge or uc. Priorities...

I once saw a nursing supervisor measuring one of my coworker's earrings to make sure that they were the size allowed in the dress code.

That supervisor obviously had too much time on their hands! But the nurse in question will find out soon enough if they are wearing dangling earrings when the confused patient decides to rip it out, and stuff like that happens! Confused patient chasing staff with his cane, one who broke the window in a rage, angry jerk throwing bottle of urine, and of course poor staff member who got punched in the eye and was on blood thinners!

You need to be on guard so I'd be careful with wearing jewelry at work!
