FCCJ info

Published

Hi everyone! I joined here before my first semester of college. I was goign to FSU as a pre-nursing student but I live in Jacksonville.

Long story short, I was VERY stressed my first semester, not just because of school but because of being away from my family. My dad and my uncle both became critically ill at the same time and it was very stressful for me to be away from my family during this time. Naturally, my grades suffered, and I ended up moving home and going to FCCJ to eliminate that stress from my life.

Anyway, I've gotten my act together and am making good grades now. However, I haven't been taking pre-reqs because I changed my mind about nursing for a while. I'm reconsidering it now, especially since FCCJ has a BSN program.

I was wondering about the point system I know it is 120 from grades, 120 from NAT and 20 from experience... but what grades are counted? All of them, or just a few? I'm going to talk to a counselor at the school soon, but they are closed for Spring Break and I want to know now lol. :uhoh3: Also, do they allow you to retake classes or not? I don't think I will have to but just in case, I would like that information. Thanks so much!

Anyone? Anyone at all? Lol.;)

The points system is based off of your pre-reqs (4 of them...well chemistry is a pre-req but does not count as far as points) and your general ed classes...basically anything you need to take for the program but do not have to be in the program to do them..

This website explains is a lil better...FCCJ's BSN program is not like a traditional university's...you have to be an RN first...you can't just get your A.A. and then get your BSN...though little information is known about it yet...

Hmm... I guess what I don't get is if an A is 4 points a B is 3 points and so on... how could that ever add up to 120 pts? Do you count certain things twice? Or do I have the points wrong?

Oh my gosh I'm so stupid. It's 30 credit hours, so I guess you multiply the grades by the credit hours. How did I not notice that before? I'm gonna blame it on the fact that it's Spring Break and my brain is out of shape...

Ugh... I feel so dumb replying to my own post this many times... but I still need to know if they let you retake classes. I read that they do but for the points they average both grades together? Is that true or do they not allow any retakes? Thanks.

I think they allow retakes and take the better grade. Call the nursing program at North Campus and set up an information session; they go over the application and answer any questions you might have. Only about an hour long and it is very informative.

I have also heard that you have to pay out of state fees to retake a class if it's just to better your grade.

But def make an apt with a counselor at North Campus and bring your great big list of questions....and try not to get too frustrated if you can't find all of your answers at once...applying for nursing school is quite the process

but well worth it the day you get your acceptance letter!

Thanks. I talked with an advisor today and she told me that you can retake classes only if you fail them... if it's just to better the grade (like from a C to a B) then they may not let you retake it at all and if they do it will probably be more expensive. But as of now I don't have to retake anything... here's hoping that I never do! Lol. But at FCCJ it doesn't seem like you have to have a 4.0 to get in to me... so that's good. I plan on aiming for A's but it's good to know that if I have a B or two I'm not necessarily going to get turned away.

I'm so excited! I'm taking the Summer off and starting in the Fall. It should only take me two semesters to finish since I have 8 classes left. I'm crazy, so I will be taking four at a time lol. But I don't have to work or anything, so I should be able to focus completely on school. So as of now, I should be starting NS (if I get in) in Fall 09! I just graduated HS in 07, so I'm right on schedule! I love the fact that if I play my cards right, I can be a RN before most of my friends graduate college. :chuckle

Anyways, thanks for all the info while I was waiting for the school to open back up after Spring Break. :chuckle I'm off to (hopefully) find others that are starting Fall 09!

hi, im going to be applying for the spring 08 semester, and was wondering if someone could explain the whole "point system"?? PLEASE!! i hadn't heard anything about points until I read these posts. Which grades are counted? just the 5 pre-reqs they ask for? or others? and then do you add the NAT score? what is an average NAT score? help me please!! i'm clueless, and nervous!

thank you

Prereq's:

A&P I - 4 Credits

A&P II - 4 Credits

Microbiology - 4 Credits

English - 3 Credits

Math - 3 Credits

Sociology - 3 Credits

Psychology - 3 Credits

Humanities - 3 Credits

Human Growth & Dev - 3 Credits

(Total of 30 Credits)

Grades: A = 4, B=3, C=2

NOTE: ALL A's will get you 120 total points for academics

There are only 3 sections from the PNAT test that will be used for the point system which gives you the rest of the 120.

Use the raw scores from:

1. Reading Comprehension

2. Academic Aptitude

3. Natural Science

Add the the 3 scores together and multipy by .64

Combine the Academic & the PNAT calculated points together will give you the quality points.

(so if you were to score perfectly on both, 120 pts from Academic & 120 pts from PNAT, your quality points should total 240.)

I think the cut off is around 185....depending on the other applicants...so I would try to aim higher than that if you can.

There is also a bonus if you already work for the healthcare, like 20 pts per year working...not sure how that goes.

Hope that helps & Good Luck!:typing

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! that is such a help! it really really is!!!
