Hello all! I am currently finishing up my pre-reqs & plan on applying in May, for the Fall of '08 nursing program @ FCCJ. My hope is to get some of the other Fall '08 people out there to start posting, so we can start "greasing the wheels", so to speak.
:welcome:
I also had a question for all of you currently going through the program. From what I've read, on all the bulletins from FCCJ students, we will be "self-learning" the Medical Terminology & the Dosage stuff, in addition to the formal classes. I am considering starting to study this now & was wanting some feedback. Is this a good idea to get a jump on things, or will I just be spinning my wheels?
Any tips & suggestions would be most appreciated.
I know that the Fall of "08 seems like a long way off, but it will be here before we know it... good luck & best wishes to all!
P.S. Recently took the NAT & got a 96.44; not the best, but plan on re-taking again after the 90 days pass... anyone else taken it recently?

my advice is to not do any extraneous work, worry about it when the time comes to do that. if anything, i'd recommend trying to learn some pharmacology in your spare time! now that class is a killer.
the independent study for 1st term dosage calculations and medical terminology is actually pretty easy, although at the time i was making a big deal/freaking out over it.
***just do what the packet says, and do the practice tests they provide and you should be good***
for me, all the problems in the text book were just additional practice;making sure i got everything down pat.
also, ms emily (the nursing tutor) provides simpler methods to solving dosage problems and what not. once you learn it her way, it is so much easier!
i made 100s on both of those tests. i also made a 100 on IV calc, if that should tell you anything. i don't think that many people failed dosage or med terms; only 4 people failed IV calc.
sorta OT, but i wis fall 08 was here already! i'd be in the last stretch of NS!
Gosh, thanks so much for the insight! I really appreciate it. Funny how everything comes full circle... here you are about to finish up your 1st semester & by the time I start the whole process, you'll be wrapping things up.
As far as the pharmacology - should I grab a book from Books-a-million (I've seen them there)? Or do you have a specific book you recommend? Hey, I'm all about reading whenever I can, ie: standing in line, waiting in line at the drive thru, sitting in traffic, etc. So, if I start now just reading snippits as I go, maybe I'll have learned a-thing-or-two by the time I actually start the program.
Thanks again!!!

Hey, I'm planning on applying for Fall 2008. Do you know about the points system. What/how are the points calculated. I'll be taking A&P II in spring then Micro. Do you know if they'll have a nights and weekends for fall '08. I already feel like I'm so behind

The points system is based on your pre-req grades and your NAT scores. For example, Microbiology is 4 credits. An "A" is worth 4 points per credit. So if you get an "A" in Microbiology you would have 16 points. The max you can get for pre-reqs is 120. For the NAT you take your raw scores for academic aptitude, natural sciences, and reading comprehension and add them together and multiply it by .64.
They have nights and weekends for the fall. I think they are going to start having it every semester. At least that is what I got from the information session they have. If you go to one of their information sessions, the lady in charge of the whole program sits down with you and goes over the application and everything...And it is really personal too...We were in a boardroom type setting and there were only like 5 other people in there besides me.
If you can, make sure you take the chemistry you need with a lab. I took Chemistry for the Liberal Arts online because it worked with my schedule but I am planning on going back and taking a chemistry with a lab so I can go and get my BSN.
I might be applying for Fall '08 but I am going to try my hand at Summer '08 first...

Hi,
Greetings to Everyone! I'm also finishing up my pre-reqs to apply for Fall 08.
I haven't taken the NAT yet. I plan to take it sometime in January 2008...so that I'll have time to re-take it before applying (if necessary).
My biggest decision has been whether or not to take Microbiology with A&P II this semester (Spring 08). If I go ahead and take the Micro...then I will have more points to apply with in June. But, if I take it and score badly...then I'll wish that I'd waited to just take it in the summer.

I would just go ahead and take micro in the summer....I mean, why stress yourself out when micro is a hard class to take already...You can be currently enrolled in it when you apply but you have to be done with anatomy II...I am going to try and apply without micro and see if I get in but with it I will have over 200 points...You know your limits, ask people at your campus what teachers to take and if they think you can do it...they will be really honest...=) Good luck!
I'm also taking Micro in the summer, so I will be applying without those points as well. But according to all the other posts regarding the points cut-off, etc., I should be fine without those points... good luck to all of you Fall '08 pre-nursing students! We'll all hang in there together!!

Regarding the NAT, check out this: https://allnurses.com/forums/gsearch.php?cx=011053513414221467008%3Amv5noemjf4m&cof=FORID%3A10&domains=allnurses.com&sig=NrRbS9DWpBilCd8I&flav=0000&q=NAT&sitesearch=allnurses.com&sa=Search#1409
If you haven't already done so, call FCCJ North campus (Nursing Dept.) & request an application packet... it will explain the points calculation formula, etc. If your grades are really good & you do well on the NAT & your total points are about 185 or higher (and I say this loosely because the cut-off varies each semester based on the scores of the applicants- could be higher-could be slightly lower).
Miss Rochelle posted on this thread several posts back explaining the point calculation, as well. So, check that out & I hope this helped... there are no guarantees, but it's best to know where you stand, in my opinion. Best of luck to you!!!!

Yes, Yes, Yes. If you ever plan on getting a BSN (and its becoming more of a requirement in the hospitals), take Chemistry with the lab. I haven't found a program yet that will allow you to enter without it.
