FAU 2014 ABSN applicants

U.S.A. Florida

I haven't seen a thread directed at applicants for this application cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Just one month left until applications open. Who's ready? :) I figure we can meet here to discuss any questions or issues with applications, provide support and feedback to fellow applicants, as well as introduce ourselves as potential future classmates! Communication is, after all, critical for all nurses.

I actually have a question to start us off. The pre-requisites listed for the program mention "College Algebra or equivalent" for science GPA calculations. In my case, I took a few more advanced mathematics courses for my degree, and I have a better grade in Calculus than I do in College Algebra. I can only chalk it up to it being my first semester in college. Does anyone know if they will count my Calc grade instead? It means the difference between a 3.8 and 3.9 for my science GPA.

Nicustudent - 3.6 cumulative, 3.9 science, 96% TEAS (99th percentile). I was accepted into the ABSN program (already hold a Bachelors and Masters in biology, two years doctoral work in cell and molecular biology). For the TEAS, I used the ATI book and practice tests only. I found everything in the book to be comparable to the actual test, except the Science section. They expect you to know a bit beyond what the book provides (I was asked a question on cranial nerves, for instance), so I would take it after you have completed all of your science prereqs.

Brianna - We will find out the due dates at orientation, I imagine. I believe they must be completed by the first day of the semester we begin clinical rotations (as per the website), so I would just ensure they are done by May 12th. Can't hurt to have them done early. Most of the vaccinations (MMR for instance) you should have had as a child, so be sure to get your immunization records for these. As for the background check, I haven't noticed a requirement for that through FAU, so I will wait until orientation for information about that. Finally, according to the website, there are no nursing scholarships available for summer. Therefore, you will have to hope for Pell Grant, which is basically impossible to get for second bachelors students. Not sure if there are FAU based grants, but here's hoping. :)

I will be attending the FAU transfer student orientation tomorrow, will any of you be there?! :)

P.S. Brianna Lewis, this is super creepy, but do you go to UF as well?

Thank you so much Quendi! You just know everything.

Hey Heather! Yes I do, you must be the girl my friend was telling me about!

Heather and Brianna, I also attend UF !!!! I will not be going to the transfer orientation, I called admissions and they said it was not mandatory if you were not a first time freshman. I am still in Gainesville. I can't wait to meet everyone!!

Brianna, that's me! It was such a crazy coincidence; she said you will be living in Jupiter for a little while? I will be commuting from Stuart, we should totally talk about carpooling at orientation :)

Any12, whaaaat?! I also called and they said it was mandatory :( so I have already paid...there goes $45, gosh darn it! Haha

I hope I didn't get wrong information . Has anyone else heard anything about being required to attend ?

I went to admissions the other day to situate my instate student status and asked if it was required to attend the additional student orientation and no one had an answer. They called the college of nursing and talked to Mary Curran and she wasn't sure either. I was told by the admissions counselor to wait and see what was suggested during the nursing orientation. I am a transfer student coming from Palm Beach state, admissions said that there are at least 3 more sessions available after the 5th that we can attended if it is needed.

I also wanted to thank everyone for posting over the last few months, I have read and gotten a lot of answers to my questions from everyone here!

I can't wait to start!

By the way I know a lot of people have been asking about the BLS and where to register, Palm Beach State offers the classes as well it was 40.00 not including the book I think they have 2 more classes scheduled before May.

I haven't heard about attending orientation, so I didn't sign up for any yet. Heather, we for sure should talk about that at orientation! I will be definitely commuting for the summer months since I am still on a lease up here in Gainesville and don't want to be on two leases. Also Any12 and Heather are you guys graduating seniors for accelerated or traditional?

nicustudent, I am going to be in the accelerated program.

Brianna, I will be graduating from UF in May and will be starting the Accelerated program. I also have a lease in Gainesville, but fortunately my parents live in Palm Beach county and it's close enough for me to commute.

Everyone, I called FAU again this afternoon about their orientation and spoke to two different people and was told the same thing. " If you are perusing a second bachelor or higher degree then you do not need to attend their orientation, only if you are a transfer or first time freshman."

I am also graduating from UF in May and starting the accelerated program :) go gata!
