FAU 2014 ABSN applicants

U.S.A. Florida

I haven't seen a thread directed at applicants for this application cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Just one month left until applications open. Who's ready? :) I figure we can meet here to discuss any questions or issues with applications, provide support and feedback to fellow applicants, as well as introduce ourselves as potential future classmates! Communication is, after all, critical for all nurses.

I actually have a question to start us off. The pre-requisites listed for the program mention "College Algebra or equivalent" for science GPA calculations. In my case, I took a few more advanced mathematics courses for my degree, and I have a better grade in Calculus than I do in College Algebra. I can only chalk it up to it being my first semester in college. Does anyone know if they will count my Calc grade instead? It means the difference between a 3.8 and 3.9 for my science GPA.

Hey everyone! I was also accepted to the ABSN program in the summer and I cannot wait to meet everyone in a few weeks. I am from Naples, am not familiar with the area, and wanted to see if anyone had any advice on apartments, etc for rent.

Hey everyone, I just found this site. I too have been accepted into the ABSN program at FAU. I'm so excited to meet everyone at orientation.

Welcome, future classmates! :)

Karen - I don't know much about specific apartment complexes and the like, but be aware cost of living, especially in the Boca area, is pretty steep. If you are planning to commute, you might be better off looking at some surrounding cities. Just a thought. :)

Anybody start on immunizations? I am currently still a student so I am going to the school clinic to get titers done soon (while it is still cheaper). Also, can anyone find the form that says TB is needed? the one I am finding on the site doesn't have it

I noticed it is not on the immunization form as well. However, on the website it states you need "evidence of a negative PPD test". It looks like they require the results themselves as it says they must be reported in millimeters, not just positive or negative. I am going to my PCP tomorrow, so I will ask her.

Apparently there is another form (http://nursing.fau.edu/uploads/docs/864/Annual%20Student%20Health%20Form.pdf) for your PPD (aka TB) test. This is the one they will need when you go back in three days to have the measurement done.

Thanks Quendi! Yeah I am going for flu and tb test soon. I got to call about the other immunizations.

Congratz to those accepted very happy for you guys!!! If anyone that just got accepted for May 2014 what was your cum gpa, science gpa and teas score, traditional or accelerated program, and how did you study for the teas and how long you studied the teas for. Any advice would be great!

Hi! I was accepted for ABSN with a 3.3 cum, 3.9 sciences GPA and a 99th percentile TEAS. I studied for the TEAS using the ATI study guide (which I picked up in the library at the school where I was doing pre-reqs) and the ATI online practice tests (they were not cheap but so worth it). I took a practice test first the results provided actually direct you to the exact pages of the study guide you should review based on your results. The study guide itself is a bit overwhelming so I font recommend looking through it all... just focus on your rough areas. After reviewing all the material my results noted as weak areas I did another practice test and repeated the process. In between the ATI tests I did the same process using the Kaplan book of practices TEAS exams (test, lookup what I got wrong and make sure I understood it). Once my practice tests were consistently coming up with scores I liked and time to complete each section was on point I went on for my real test. I will say I really only did the over the course of about 2 weeks... but I say practice until you like your scores and then go for it! I found the TEAS to be a lot worse on my head than it was in reality. Good luck!

Honestly not sure of what everything exactly is, cumulative is 3.5, science is I think a 3.65 (not sure what FAU used in comparison to other schools), and I scored in the 96th percentile for TEAS.

For all the FAU soon to be nurses, when is everything supposed to be done by? So far I have gotten my TB test, flu shot, tetorifice and I am taking the BLS course Wednesday night.....I have not gotten the other vaccines, physical, or background check done yet. I did a background check for UCF using that website so I am going to see if I can somehow add a school and not pay the whole $90 again. Also, does anyone know when the scholarship is due?

*Sorry for all these questions and thanks in advance :)

Also nicustudent, I did not really study for the TEAS. I basically bought a book off amazon and did 2 hours a week for a month. I was taking Chemistry at the time so I was familiar with a lot of that information. My weakest portion on the TEAS was science however, but when they break it up by section, it was in sciences I have never taken before aka physics and geology. I would say know a little about every science because I saw it all. Also, youtube does have good videos on there. I listened to a few about biology

Thank you for your feedback Mrs.Lucky and Brianna. Brianna did you apply for traditional or accelerated?
