FAU 2014 ABSN applicants

U.S.A. Florida

I haven't seen a thread directed at applicants for this application cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Just one month left until applications open. Who's ready? :) I figure we can meet here to discuss any questions or issues with applications, provide support and feedback to fellow applicants, as well as introduce ourselves as potential future classmates! Communication is, after all, critical for all nurses.

I actually have a question to start us off. The pre-requisites listed for the program mention "College Algebra or equivalent" for science GPA calculations. In my case, I took a few more advanced mathematics courses for my degree, and I have a better grade in Calculus than I do in College Algebra. I can only chalk it up to it being my first semester in college. Does anyone know if they will count my Calc grade instead? It means the difference between a 3.8 and 3.9 for my science GPA.

Well guys, one month down, 2.5 to go! XD How are applications going?

As per the unanswered question posed by kayl600, has anyone else applied who has noticed where the FAU Z number is placed?

more like 4.5  Im thinking end of march? Or do you mean just to turn in applications? LOL...I am looking at ...when we find out...the clock is slowly clicking down.

As far as the Z number...I would have SWORN I put it on there...and Im going back through it and I dont see it any place.

I was going for applications closing. We will know about interviews earlier than March, and that's what I'm really waiting for. :)

Congrats kayl on the TEAS and application submission!

I'm nervous, anxious, and excited at the same time. Is this the only programs you all are applying to?

I think we are all feeling like that! ;)

For me, yes. I own a home here and cannot afford to relocate to another area. I considered other programs in the South FL area, but FAU's Nursing program has exactly what I'm looking for, so I refuse to settle. I'm hoping to pursue a PhD in Nursing at FAU as well.

Quendi...How far are you from the school? I am in South West Broward. I am NOT looking forward to the drive but I also only plan on attending FAU. I graduated with my first degree from FAU BUT all my classes had been in Davie. I figure I will drive up and stay all day. I am so lucky my kids will all get the bus for that time frame and my husband will be here with them. Right now I drive to North BC for classes and it has been fine.

I cant imagine driving to UM or south. I would rather drive north via sawgrass.

I live in Boynton Beach, pretty close to 95. It's about a 15-20 minute drive South from my house to Boca Campus (when it isn't rush hour that is). I love Boca campus, it's been a second home for me during my undergraduate and Masters degrees. I couldn't imagine attending another program, especially considering how good FAUs nursing program is! Also, Dr. D was so kind and helpful when we met that I knew this was someone I wanted to emulate on my path to becoming a nurse. She has really made the program unique. :)

I have to commend you and the others who do this with a family and kids. I can't imagine how much more challenging that makes it for you.

Hi there!

I'm also applying for the accelerated program for 2014. I have my BA Psychology and really hoping to get in. Thanks for starting this discussion as I have definitely checked out the one from last year. It has made me both excited and nervous!! All my pre-reqs are done, have been accepted to FAU (general) and now just completing nursing CAS. I was also wondering about entering Z number in CAS and if there is a place for it. I have taken the TEAS once but taking again in December with A LOT more studying. I received "proficient" the first time but will be trying for something much better the next test!

Totally agree about thins being the program for me as others have mentioned. I'm so impressed with the school of nursing in general and the idea of being certified as a holistic nurse is so appealing!! Really excited to embark on this journey!

Welcome! The FAU Nursing program is all around amazing. Keep us updated on how your application goes, and best of luck! We are here to answer any questions you may have.

Hi everyone! I am also planning on applying for the accelerated BSN program at FAU. It sounds wonderful and I really hope to be a part of it! I took the TEAS recently; while I tested fairly well, it wasn't good enough! I am retaking it in December. I have one question that I hope someone can answer. Does anyone know whether the minimum GPA requirement is completely cumulative, or if it only comes from the last 60 credits of your bachelor's degree, or from your highest degree? One place on the website states "Bachelor's degree with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (this is the GPA calculated by awarding institution). Post-baccalaureate classes are not included in this calculation." However, in the FAQ section, it states "The minimum overall GPA must be 3.0 from your highest degree." It seems trivial to most people; however, my GPA jumped dramatically from my AA degree (chalk it up to careless teenage years) to my BA degree and means qualifying or not. I did not notice this before I attended the information session and I live an hour and a half away. According to the website, they are not allowing candidates phone time, so I'm hoping someone on here has already asked this question...

Welcome! I had a similar question about my application, although it was concerning my BS and Graduate degree GPAs. What I was told is that they look primarily at the nursing pre-reqs GPA, then consider the overall GPA. In your case, I believe it would be the cumulative of your 4 years total (AA and BA), as most people just have the bachelors. If you did exceptionally well in your nursing pre-reqs and have at least a 3.5 overall GPA, you should be fine. Definitely try to get that TEAS score up, as I believe most applicants have pretty competitive scores (99th percentile). If you want a definite answer, try shooting an email to the ABSN coordinator. I imagine she will help you out. Best of luck!

Quendi, thanks for your response! I actually have a Master degree, which is why I am a bit confused. In one place they tell you that post-baccalaureate classes are not included in the GPA; however, in the FAQ, it states that the GPA must be from your highest degree. The wording here means a difference in whether or not I am eligible. I am going to make a phone call tomorrow and hopefully have this cleared up. It is frustrating because my science pre-req GPA is a 3.7; I just completely blew off my first two years of college and I'm paying for it now! I hope they just look at the bachelor's (and/or master's) GPA!

I was told that they will look at higher degree GPAs as a secondary consideration, but I think they mainly are concerned with your bachelors degree. This is why I wish they required personal statements, it allows you to address these issues. Unfortunately, we are mainly playing a numbers game. Let us know how it goes!
