Fastest way to get out of state license

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi! I am graduating in TX but have a job offer in CT. CT is not a compact state. What is the fastest way to get my CT license? I thought license by examination would be as I could just take the NCLEX here in TX for a CT license but the BON site says I need to be graduated before I can start that process (if I'm reading correctly). If it takes months for the CT BON to approve me to take the NCLEX here I would have to wait months post graduation before I could even take the NCLEX?

You will need to have graduated before you can receive your ATT regardless of the state you apply for. The BON must receive your transcripts in order to process your application.

If you were to apply in TX, you would need to graduate, apply to TX, wait for the school to submit all required paperwork on their end, get the ATT, test, pass, get the TX license, apply to CT for licensure by endorsement.

If you apply directly in CT, you would follow the requirements for an out of state school as part of the application process (likely along the same lines, but you'd have to verify- you will specifically have to request your school sends your transcripts to CT), get your ATT, test, pass, and gain a license.

I have no insight into either state's processing times, but going direct to CT is going to be a lot fewer steps. Fewer steps almost always means less time.

The application process varies by state. The school has to send in transcripts, criminal background checks have to be done, hopefully your clinical hours are sufficient for the CT BON, etc.. I had to wait two months for the all-clear after conferral from my ASN program, which was a total of four months after I completed all the school's requirements. The time will fly by.
