Family Nurse Practitioner Student-Clinical Preceptorship

Published

Hi Everyone,

I am struggling to find a clinical preceptor for my clinical rotations. I have called various family practices throughout the Phoenix area where I live, and have had no success. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to call or experience in which they could advise me on how to go about finding a clinical preceptor? My school unfortunately has not been able to help me with this.

Thanks.

This is one of the best kept secrets about NP programs, epecially the online programs and ones that don't have an affiliation with a hospital or system. My wife was in the same boat as you and ended up finding a site that is almost 3 hours from here. But, ya gotta do what you gotta do.

finding clinical sites is difficult. If there are any prosective NP students reading this, believe me you will want to know if your prosective school has any affiliation with local hospitals and whether or not the school provides assistance with clinical placement. IMHO that is one of the services you pay the school thousands of dollars for. To me having to pay thousands in tution and have to do all of the leg work yourself is unacceptable.

So dear readers, if you select a school that doesn't participate in the process of procuring your clinical sites, then be prepared for a huge nightmare. If this bothers you then select to a school that does.

Truer words were never spoken!!

I have embarked on a campaign to educate potential students who opt for a "choose your own adventure" nursing education program - that promises you the ability to do your clinical practicum at a location you choose. Most larger healthcare systems (like mine) are not longer agreeing to work with any "one off" clinical arrangements for individuals because of the associated cost & liability. They only host students enrolled in schools with whom they have a formal contract (with a lot of stipulations).

I am attending a brick et mortar college that is affiliated with the hospital that I work for,....I still have to find my own preceptors. It seemed overwhelming at first, but in the end I had more offers than needed. Keep at it,..good luck everyone!

For anyone reading this thread doing their homework on NP programs, if you want to minimize the hasstle, anxiety, and travel required for clinical, pick a program that has an affiliation with the hospital or health system you want to do your clinical experience in. A brick and morter program with a long history in the area will most likely have the connections you need.

Email me at [email protected]. A NP grad posted a link where you can search for preceptors in different areas. It may be helpful. I haven't used it yet. I am starting the program in June

On FB there is a group called Preceptors for Nurse Practitioner Students. find it on FB, request entry, and post what preceptors you need. This group is full of students and preceptors who will help you out.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all of your responses. I just found a preceptor!! It was very difficult but I did manage to.

Good luck everyone!!
