Just a reminder for whoever interested in applying to fall 2010 UCLA MECN program, the deadline is Nov. 2, 2009.
Let me share my story. I mailed my application to UCLA SON two weeks ago via certified mail. I thought I could track my package on USPS website. However, it only showed that the postal service received my package and there was no more further info regarding the arrival at UCLA. I panicked and called the USPS three times with three different phone #s. And I went to my local postal office to recall my package. NO LUCK. They told me to call PO with 90095 zip code. Finally, I talked to the right person who worked in the Village postal in Westwood. He said UCLA had its own postal service system and it did not conform any kind of mailing. I was sort of relief that knowing my package was with UCLA SON. This is my first time applying to MECN. Anyone who is re-applicant out here, do you mind share your previous experience with UCLA-MECN?
I emailed to ***** if she received my app, and she replied yes. Since you hand delivered it, I don't think you need to worry whether she got it or not. I applied to one of the local CCs for spring 2010, but all applicants were on the waitlist already. According to the counselor, I can get in no later than fall 2010. Hope it is true! Cross my finger. If I can get into any of the RN program, I am happy as a little clam.
hi everyone, i also applied for fall 2010 at ucla's mecn program. i'm so glad i finished the application and have it turned in! i'm also applying to csun's Accelerated BSN program. that application is due at the end of this month, so i'll soon have all my applications submitted. i decided the best way to keep my mind occupied until i find out if i got in is to stay busy with work and school. i graduate this december (csuci, biology, b.s.), but i'm going to take spanish, pathophysiology and pharmacology at a community college during the spring semester. hopefully march will be here before i know it!
i live in ventura county, so i'm not looking forward to the commute into l.a., should i be accepted, but i heard that there are shuttles you can take to school, which will allow me to study (and save gas!). anyhow, just wondering what everyone's undergraduate degree is in? i have a b.a. in philosophy and b.s. in biology. so, i'm really hoping to get into a master's program. no more bachelors’ degrees for me; i'm ready for graduate level work!
I come from a very varied background, with a BA in Theatre Arts. I've been a webmaster for the past 9 years at an engineering firm. My goal is to become a Certified Diabetes Educator via RN route after living with the disease for over 26 years. My self discovery and passion for research has lead me to make a change to become a professional instead of just a patient, volunteer and mentor.
hi girls,
good to hear from you and your experience. i was a biology major too and worked for a biotech company for a few years, recently got laid off b/c of the bad economy. it was hard to go back to the classroom as i left the college few years ago. i am getting used to it and enjoying a lot. i am going to take one chem course (general & organic combination) in the spring, since my chem courses are more than five years old. maybe take one nutrition & food course also, still debating.
sugarlips, i have type i diabetes too! 23 years, so you've got 3 years on me! have you looked into the campus's health benefits? i've been concerned about getting adequate health care without coverage through my work.
i'm always so excited to meet other diabetics! my next door neighbor has type ii diabetes, and we often get into deep discussions on the topic of delicious low-carb foods (his favorite subject). do you have an insulin pump? i waited quite awhile before getting mine, but now i feel that i couldn't live without it. i've been training for a half-marathon, and the pump has made it so much easier to control my bgs. no more annoying nph peaks.
my interest is primarily in epidemiology and public health, so i've been focusing on getting volunteer experience in those areas. i currently volunteer for the red cross and love it. i was working last week while they were administering h1n1 vaccines. over 2000 vaccines in one day! where are you volunteering?
I have looked into some programs and am really scared myself. Keeping my current plan would be best, but the COBRA monthly payment of over $450 is really going to add to my loan, especially if I get into a master's program. I know that Rx copayments will be available but not sure if they cover DME supplies.
I've been on Minimed's Paradigm since 2003 and currently use the 522 with the CGMS. Been on the CGMS since January 2008 and can't imagine not having it now. Good for you doing the 1/2 marathon. I did 4 100 mile rides in support of the JDRF's Ride for a Cure, with 3 in Death Valley and one in Montana with a team in 2007. Since I went back school in 2008 I haven't been able to participate, but started to mentor again.
I've been volunteering at Cedars Sinai in the Saperstein Tower since Nov 2008 and I think this is my last week. I wish I could get the H1N1 vaccine, but no one seems to have it where I can get it. Being Type 1 and working in Healthcare you would think I'd be able to get to the front of the line SOMEWHERE! SMC had it for a day, but didn't find out until it was too late. Do you think I can go to the Red Cross and get it?
FYI Tanya, I called UCLA to find out about their student health program.

Basically they cover pumps, and everything else. I asked about the CGMS and they said I would need a doctor's letter of medical necessity, which is how I got it covered in the first place. Really good news is that there is no additional monthly cost incurred as the coverage is included with our school fees.
Deductible is $350 in-network, max out of pocket is $2500. $20 copays. Mail Order Rx is either $30, $60, $90 or $200 for 3 month supply depending on Tier level.
hi, fellow biologist, amy2020! i interned at a biotech company for a year and realized i needed to go to graduate school because anyone doing anything interesting had a master's or phd, otherwise the work was fairly repetitive and boring (to me).
i was off of school for awhile too after getting a b.a. and it took some time for me to get back into the routine of studying. the chemistry course sounds fun. but, of course, that's a matter of opinion! i'm taking microbiology this semester and the lab for that class is one of my all-time favorites. i love growing bacteria! biology is so great.
sugarlips, sorry, i didn't see your post. i think we we're posting around the same time yesterday. to find out where the h1n1 vaccine is being offered in your county, it's best to go to the county's public health website. l.a.'s is http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/h1n1.htm. if red cross is giving the vaccine in your county, it should be listed through that website. i'm surprised you were unable to get it at the hospital! l.a. county actually received the vaccine before ventura county.
also, make sure to get the seasonal flu shot. while the cdc is saying that it will not be protective against h1n1, there was a study published in vaccine journal ("immunoinformatic comparison of t-cell epitopes contained in novel swine-origin influenza a (h1n1) virus with epitopes in 2008–2009 conventional influenza vaccine") that contains data to indicate the seasonal flu vaccine may afford at least some protection against h1n1.
thanks for the info on health coverage! that lifts a tremendous weight off my shoulders. the school's coverage actually sounds better than what i get through work. now, all i need to do is get accepted!
I have to send in my transcripts from mesa too, still finishing up micro at the moment... (hate that class with a passion)
but I also applied to USD, Columbia and Johns Hopkins
I'm also thinking about applying to U San Fran, but the deadline is right when I find out about admission into the other schools that I listed above. So I guess we'll see, I have until February anyway :) Also possibly a CSU school, but the state programs require some TEAS test and personally, i'm all standardized-tested out. no more!
How about yourself??

You know, I'm just realizing I never received a confirmation email. However, I hand delivered my application. Do you think they didn't send an email because obviously it made it there?
