Failing! & want to be a Nurse :(

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

okay so i am a freshman in college, this is my secondsemester. i am not the best student ever, last semester i failed worldreligions but i am re-taking it now and surely i am receiving an "a"and now i am taking speech and i am a bit stressed because i'm on the verge offailing. i am taking 6 classes this semester and i don't work because i havewonderful parents that want me to do well in college but i'm a wreck! i justreally suck at math, and literature and all that stuff. i still have a fewsemesters to go before i take anatomy but i am just so passionate aboutnursing, i am 100% i want to be a nurse i've researched so much info onlinesince high school. i have even volunteered for a bit at baycare ( localhospital) and i am currently waiting for my test date to take my cna. i ampassionate with any medical terms or anything that relates to nursing. but whenit comes to math, essay, ethics or any of that i suck. so i know i am still afreshman but i am so freaked out because i'm just not the brightest studentwith my college req's. how will this affect my chances in the nursing program?any similar experiences? i take so many classes because i want to finish so ican get to my anatomy but i am beginning to regret that. any advice please. imay be young but i am passionate about nursing. will failing speech really killmy chances? help!

WHY are you taking 6 classes?? That's a lot, even for a person who doesn't work. And it's obviously too much for you because your grades are suffering. Failing speech will negatively affect your GPA and that will in turn affect your chances of getting into the nursing program.

My advice is to drop a few classes if you can. Having a couple W's on your transcript is better than F's. If it's too late to drop classes, try and see a tutor, form study groups with your peers, ask your professor's for help, etc.

Literature isn't horribly important for nursing but math is. So that definitely needs your extra attention.

Good luck to you! Please do yourself a favor next semester and take a few less classes. ;)

I agree, especially being a young student. You are still trying to find an effective way of studying and getting used to the flow of classes. I would say drop down to fewer classes. It is only going to get more difficult, especially once you start taking your sciences ( Chem, A/P I & II etc).

I was just accepted into a BSN program as a 3rd year transfer having already completed one BS in Health Science and the one factor that schools ALWAYS look at is the GPA of the student. Of course school take into consideration work history, essays, previous degrees... but sometimes (most of the time) the programs are SO competitive that they use the GPA as a tool to weed out applicants.

Keep working hard and best of luck to you!! Listen to your gut!

Slow down!! I get the feeling (just by reading your post) that you're hurried and hard on yourself at the same time. Take a deep breath, drop a class or two if you can and focus. If you are passionate about being a nursing student you're going to have to learn to overcome your stress, that's for sure. Being stressed out and too hard on yourself is going to wreck your prerequisites. From what I've seen here, all schools are heavy with applications and the higher your GPA -the better. As of now, focus on getting your grades (and your chin) up and gain some confidence! You're new to the college scene and overwhelmed. I think it's safe to say that we've all been there. You only "suck" because you say so. Start telling yourself that you "rock" and you can get through anything.

I agree with everyone else. Slow it down a bit. Since 12 credit hours is considered full time, why are you in such a hurry? I am taking 6 classes this year, but that's only because I'm in my 40s and don't have a lot of time. You have plenty of time and a lot of support.

Yes, failing will affect you. Of course. And, if you're taking so many classes that you have to retake some, you're defeating the purpose.

Good luck.

Thank you! I am thinking of dropping one class. Although if withdraw I will recieve a "W"...but if I dont I will recieve an "F" so thats my concern. Should i withdraw?

So what do you guys recommend changing my major since I probably have no hope in getting in in the future or do I still have a chance? I'm an average student failing speech. I am determined to take lower classes and aim for "A's"

Maybe it's not the speech class that is giving you problems. You may benefit from taking an intro/remedial English course or two.

I agree with the above posters; I would try and take fewer classes. I'm taking 15 credit hours this semester, and I work. Last semester I took 18 and I survived with all A's, one A+, and a B+. It is definitely hard to get used to taking that many classes at once; I had to do it to keep my scholarship.
