Hello, everyone!
I'm new here and am really needing some help.
I just found out yesterday that I failed the NCLEX for the second time. My wife, bless her heart, is taking it a lot harder than I am. A LOT harder.
The first time that I took the NCLEX all I really did to prepare was to take the Hurst review and study it up until I took my test. Took all 265 questions and failed. The paperwork in the mail said that I was "Near the passing standard" in all categories...that I was on the verge of actually passing the test. At least, that's how it made me feel.
For the first test, I didn't study any NCLEX review questions except the ones that came with the Hurst review. For my second test, ALL I did was NCLEX review questions, primarily ones from the online NCLEX 3500 and from the Saunders 4th edition. I studied over 1500 questions in preparation for my 2nd NCLEX test and when I sat down at the terminal to take it a 2nd time, it felt like I hadn't studied at all.
Instead of 265 questions, it cut off at 227. I was abit excited and nervous at the same time. I mean, it cut off earlier that it did last time! Surely this is a good thing!
Apparently not.
Found out at 8am, October 18th, that I had failed again and I think that this time, I'll have to wait 90 days before I can take it again, so it'll be 2009 before I can test. I'll call the nursing board on Monday to see if that's the case.
I want to pass it the next time I take it.
So any ideas? Suggestions? I'm considering doing Suzanne's plan and I may get a review book about prioritizing since I had a ton of those questions on both tests.
I'm still going to study the Saunders book since I never finished doing all of it. I started doing Suzanne's plan, but didn't have enough time to finish the first book portion of it.
I'd love to hear any thoughts that you have and thanks for listening!
I took the test on August 20th and failed... I tend to agree with the previous post in that after you fail once, it diminishes your confidence. I hadn't picked up a book since and just started, hoping to do Suzanne's plan since I can't afford a course. I was a nurse for 7 years and I let my liscence lapse... you would think I knew more, but much has changed and it has been a long time since I was in school. He is right, there are a lot of nurses who are flat STUPID, and if they can do it, anyone of moderate intelligence can. I am getting in the saddle and speaking confidence over myself ... I may have been OVERconfident since I had been a nurse before. I will keep taking the sucker til I pass. God bless and hang in there.
:bugeyes:There are a lot of nurses that I know and that was also mentioned here that did not pass the test a couple of times, but these nurses turned out to be very good , even excellent in what they do...my sister did not pass it a couple of times and she was one of the best nurses you can have in the ortho floor. If I remember one of the nurses did not pass it either and she is now an ICU nurse! The point I am making is that it is just one of those things that goes w/ the territory. Not passing it is not the end of the world or as I noticed people were quick in labeling such as "low intelligence" , "moderate intelligence"...............really???? What an arrogance ... to try to measure others intelligence just like that!
Sure we need intelligence to be a nurse to pass all those science pre requisites , but do not make it sound so condescending because others did not pass it the first time ....big deal !!!!
So be kind to your fellow nurses , help them....think what you feel if you were in their shoes!! Empathy !!! this is another trait you need to be a good nurse.
I know that it takes a lot of preparation going into a board. Its like going into a battle. This is a simple and most powerful thing you can carry on in life. Why is PRAYER important? Prayer quiets our heart. Prayer clears our vision. Prayer activates our faith and prayer makes things to happen. GOODLUCK!
Hello naniwhat,
Prayer is very important and especially in difficult times like preparing for the NCLEX-RN. So many people have many different stories but it all comes down to the fact that you're not alone. GOD has different journey's for all of us and one day we will all look back and realize what was needed to be done in our preparation. We are all here for you and to support you. Good Luck in your preparation! You can do this!:redpinkhe
Debbie,Yeah, I've seen that and may still do it, but I really feel that I do best with hands on training.
I'll spend some more time considering my options, but I really feel that I may need another review because of the time that I've been out of school. I just hope that I'm not forgetting anything!
Of course, the NCLEX makes you feel that you didn't learn anything in the first place!

Until you have 15 posts you can not send Suzanne a pm with the information she requests in the format. We do ask that posts are meaningful to the forum.
Hi redheadnurse08! I am a new member. I joined this forum, in the hope that it will help me in my journey to be a US RN. I failed the NCLEX exam the second time, myself. I just learned the result last week. I have read Saunder's 4th Edition, Kaplan, Mary Ann Hogan's, Mosby's Pathophysiology Memory Cards, etc. but still feel I need a lot more. You mentioned about Suzannes's plan that you are doing right now. How may I know more about the details?
Hi MetabaronX! You are not alone in not making the NCLEX for the second time. I am a second taker, myself. I'm a new member here too, hoping that this forum will be an add on to my learning. I understand the feeling of having studied really hard but still lacking some more. Like you, I have read many books, KAPLAN, Saunder's 4th Edition, Mary Ann Hogan's, Mosby's Pathophysiology Memory Cards, Nursing Mnemonics by JoaAnn Zerwekh, plus a lot more references. All of these are good books but I guess I had to be more relaxed to be able to absorb all of them deeply.
I've heard stories of nurses passing the NCLEX the first time reading only one book and I ask myself what have I done wrong. You said most of your performances were near passing standard...same with mine. I've got the Safety and Infection Control above the passing standard but to my surprise, I was only near the passing standard in Psychosocial Integrity which I was confident in. lol! One thing I've realized went wrong is overanalyzing. "Paralysis by Analysis" so they say. There were also instances wherein I realized I submitted the wrong answer and how I wished I could go back to the question. Duh!!
I'm sorry about how your wife has taken it. Let's go on, MetabaronX! We can both do it the third time around. Then success will be sweeter!!

Hello Bright08,
I would suggest doing your 15 meaningful post as Silverdragon has mentioned and follow the instructions for sending the PM. GOOD LUCK!
Debbie

i too will be taking my 2nd time. i was totally devastated upon learning that i did not pass my 1st but that's life...it just happens...we only have 2 choices .....to try again or to quit.....if we quit, then the result is final...if we try again,we have the chance to finally win this challenge...it is all up to us...:typing
