Hi Guys,
I took my test about 3 days ago and recently found out that I failed the test first time. I failed it miserably at 75 questions. I went to the testing center with a fellow friend who took hers too. She fortunately passed with 265. I felt devastated. To fail at 75? That means I'm really lacking on the materials. I had a lot of OB questions, 19 SATA and 4 ordered, no math. When i was doing my exam, I wasn't sure with a lot of the questions and felt like I was guessing on most of them. I also realized that I was getting knowledge based questions. Prior to the test, I had anxiety and felt that I wasn't ready. I really should have changed my date, but I didn't. I waited about 2 months to do the test because of trying to finish Kaplan qbank. I studied the day before the exam all day and should have relaxed. I used Kaplan since the school provided it to us. I did about 1500 questions and the Question trainers. I didn't finish the trainers because I ran out of time. I did the readiness and that scored me at 67.8%. I can't do the refund because the requirement is that I do all the trainers. I'm not really looking for a refund. I just want to pass my test. A lot of my classmates have passed first time. So far I know, about 3 of of us have not passed.
I just want to know if anyone have passed their second attempt? What sources did you use? I bought Saunders to brush up on content and LaCharity. I'm thinking of buying Uworld for 2 or 3 months subscription. I contacted my instructor and she said Kaplan has a test plan for second takers and she will email me back. So I don't know, what do you guys think?
I haven't reapplied yet but I will in the next few weeks. I'm just saving up for it. I just feel so down right now. I really want to become a nurse!
Thanks,
D
Wow Congratulations!!!!! I'm so happy for you!!! Yes same with my experience. Thank you for the reply. I just want to know what did you do to study? And how long did you wait until you did the exam again? Another thing, would you recommend that I use Kaplan again because I used it before and so not pass. To tell you the truth, I wasn't fully using their resources. I was just using their qbanks and would just read the rationale when I remediate. Or, do you suggest I use a different study item like Uworld? Thanks again for replying.
You're welcome!!! Now, I took my test the first time on June 6th. On June 8th I found out I failed and also paid the $200 to re-register with Pearson Vue. My state requires you fill out a re-test application by hand and mail it in with a $65 money order. They normally send that form to you with your CPR results when you fail, but I found the form on the BON website, printed it and mailed it in instead of waiting for them to send it to me. (Which it's a good thing I did because I JUST got my results yesterday from when I failed JUNE 6th!) I got my new ATT around the first week of July, tested July 25th and passed.
The first time I prepared for the exam I used UWorld and LaCharity. The second time I did the same but added Kaplan. For me I found the decision tree more confusing than helpful other than the fact that I learned how you always choose physical over psychosocial. I mostly just used it for their Qbank and readiness test. I did all 395 prioritization questions in that section of Lacharity. I think UWorld will help you with content and how to think through questions because they do have mostly higher level questions; however, it is important to have an understanding of why each answer is right/wrong because I found that on NCLEX the questions are hard but not as "lengthy" as they are on UWorld which to me made them harder. Good Luck!!! Let me know if you have any other questions!!!
I graduated for my BSN program in 2010 and (being an LVN for 22yrs prior) I did neither Hurst or Kaplan. I didn't take snacks or fluids because it said don't bring anything. My test lasted 6 gruelling hrs with nothing to eat or drink (I didn't eat before the test, I was too excited) all the questions because when it asked if I would come back in 15 min and retake the vitals, I said that is what I would do; Because, that is what I would do! I was devastated I graduated with a 3.9 and I was the guy all the students came to when they had questions. I didn't know what I did wrong. I had worked for 10 years on the med surg floor straight out of Voc nursing school back when LVNs did total pt care and the RN floor supervisor took care of the IVs (almost all meds back then were PO with some K+ added to the NS on occasion), and I DID NOT PASS do to using real life experience.
I then was gun shy, depressed, and during the next few years, my Mother, Father and other family members passed away and I became the family nurse caring for the dying. I had built the test and my failure at it up in my head so much, that I could not take the test again.
About 18 months ago I ruptured a disk in my back lifting a pt (doing home health as an LNV) and due to workmans comp issues and various other problems it has taken this long to get healthy. since I had nowhere to go and nothing else I could do I purchased both Kaplan and Hurst, watched all the videos, multiple times, took all the practice tests, and understood what I did wrong the first time.
On Thursday 07/27/2017 I took it again, it closed out at 75 questions MOST of which were SATA. It was extremely difficult and even though I felt good about it I wasn't 100% sure I passed (who is?). I live in California and we have the BreEZe system where you go online and verify someone's License and because I had heard Horror stories about California's BON taking 6 months to give results I was not prepared for what I saw when I, as a joke, went online and was going to tell my wife "Well, not an RN yet."
There it was today, Saturday, 2 days after taking my test, I AM AN RN. I am a burly manly man and I can not quit crying. All the time, anxiety, frustration and fear, seven years later, today I am an RN
One thing I will say for advice is that if you have worked in health care, DO NOT overthink the questions. Answer specifically what is asked. Do NOT go "yes, but what about..." or "yes, but what if..." Just answer the question as best you can. Too often people overthink the questions and mess themselves up. And good luck!!!
NEVER use real world experience or what you think you would do in the real world to answer NCLEX questions. Because on the NCLEX you work at Hospital Utopia where everything is perfect, you have everything you would ever need to do anything. One of the funniest/kind of true things i've heard is my preceptor telling me "okay now forget all the crap nursing school taught you and let's teach you how nursing really is." Real life nursing will get many questions wrong in the NCLEX world.

Aww Congrats on your hardwork!! Although it took awhile, you finally got it! I actually live in PA. So I did get my unofficial results and am just waiting for my CPR reports to know where I did wrong. Thank you for replying. I know I will not give up!! I will become an RN í ½í¸Š
Are you in California? I took my nclex and found out that I failed and when I found out I failed I reapplied to the BRN. I paid the $200 on pearson so i can get my att quicker. I have not hear back from them yet and I really want to reschedule my exam. I studied for my nclex first time around on uworld but failed because I did not really understand the rationales. Did you use uworld the second time around? What did you do differently?
