Failed NCLEX due to anxiety! Need new review course!!

Published

Hello all! This is my first time posting, after lurking for years while in school. I see some great advice given so I'm going to ask for your opinions.

First, I took the NCLEX Monday. I knew I should have went to get a prescription for my anxiety, but I wanted to wing it. Plus, I had NO IDEA the room would be so tiny.

I was shaking like a leaf! Through the tutorial, through the first question, until I got to question 30, where I felt like I almost couldn't breathe. I raised my hand to take a break. I went to the bathroom and tried to gather myself. Splashed water on my face, and went back. The moderator could see it on my face. She said " I can tell you don't want to go back in there"

Two hours in I was only on Question 76. I caught myself a few times just staring at a question. I don't even know when the machine shut off. It was Over 90. but I'm pretty sure under 100. I actually left feeling great! Glad to be out of that room, but knowing that I needed medication in order to do this again. And just to confirm I did my quick results today. And I indeed failed.

I just wanted to give that background, but my real question is, what Review online course is the best. I did a google search, and it said Kaplan ( Which I already had) was #1, and something called Board Vitals. Has anyone used this??

I LOVED UWORLD. But, my QBank only has 300 Questions left. Thats not going to be enough for 30 days!!

All answers are appreciated!!!

And before anyone says anything, I know I have to get my anxiety in check before I take it again. I already have an appt with the DR!!! :)

Thanks to all who respond!

You, and one other person who is now saying they never said that.

Ignorance?? LOL!! ok...

That was great for you, that you did not have a panic attack during your exam. Just because YOU didn't doesn't mean someone else won't!

And again, people need to really read. Nowhere did I ask you guys to offer suggestions about my anxiety. You guys aren't doctors. Stop trying to diagnose me. I asked about Review courses. Let's stay on topic please and thanks..

Diagnose you?! YOU said you have anxiety!!! Did you forget? Reread your post please. Hell, it's in the TITLE!

Also, it's been a couple people who have realized you're not taking responsibility of your actions. How do you know I didn't have anxiety during the NCLEX? Were you there? No. Be an adult & take responsibility for your actions, don't make excuses. Also, you made it through nursing school, so just own up to the real reason you failed. But then again, ignorance is bliss. But ignorance will make you fail.

This is from you, not me. clearly, you said I was making an excuse....not going to go back and forth. It really doesn't matter. On top of the fact I clearly stated in the original post that I know I need to get my anxiety under control, I was asking for review courses, not about my anxiety. But now I see if you don't want people who don't know you from Adam to be judgmental, just leave extra details out.

Are you talking to ME???

This is my original post:

If you initially stated that you had a feat of enclosed spaces, then the responses would have been different.

Your initial post:

If you have a claustrophobic anxiety, then that should've been your title; you only describe what you were feeling, and no when in your OP where I read you have claustrophobia; based on your post it seemed as though you had test anxiety alone, hence the additional responses that are suggesting test anxiety related replies and solutions...so-put down the chip on your shoulder please.

As far as your failing-it is still essential to look at your performance review to see how you did on the test; even though your were effected by the claustrophobia, it will be still helpful to see the results.

What is promising is that you are able to have test accommodations and will be able to retest in 45 days; If your practice scores were in the 60s then you can touch on doing a few mock exams twice a week, because you are prepared to pass this exam, just to keep your mind ready for the exam.

You are asking for additional resources to review as well-you can do Kaplan free online or I suggest source close to the NCLEX as possible-the NCSBN and do the questions only; 50 dollars for 3 weeks is the minimum course package.

Best wishes.

This is your response-you didn't quote me, but based in your response, it seems as though you were responding to me:

I did say, I didnt know the room would be so tiny. My bad for not also stating, I have fear of enclosed spaces. But its more of, the fact that Im trapped and no way out unless someone else lets me out. Because bathrooms are small, but I can let myself out at any time. Unless it was that one time where the door jammed. :) If it was a situation where as, I could leave the room when I wanted to, I believe it would have been better.

The chip on my shoulder is because you said I was making excuses. And Im not. I know what caused me to fail. My predictor I scored 97 pct of passing the 1st time. Im not naive to needing to read the report. Im in no way thinking that I don't have to still study. Thats why I asked about other review courses. But the fact of the matter is, If I dont get it under control whether its with meds, or non pharm, I wont pass. I have to be able to sit and read the questions without shaking and feeling out of control. I was shaking during the tutorial!!

I appreciate the suggestion for NCBSN. I was reading testimonials and I like how its broken down by systems. Leaning towards this review. Hurst is too heavy for my pockets right now!

This was my response:

First, I never said you were making excuses, so let's get that out of the way, since you are quoting me.

Second, even though you stated "the room was tiny", people with general anxiety have similar symptoms, so there is no way to discern what type of anxiety you have.

And to reiterate the point-if you have a 97 percent chance, you will be fine for the retake and at this point if you go with NCSBN, and use a mock testing style, and work with your physician, you will be fine.

Best wishes.

And then you quote this:

I guess here is my thing, we all had anxiety taking that test. I shook and was terrified as well. You are making an excuse as to why you failed. I'm sorry, you are.

.

I didn't say that to YOU

I'm LadyFree28-NOT NurseGirl525...

If you are saying this is from ME-you are mistaken.

Please quote appropriately, instead of being defensive to people who are trying to help you navigate through your frustration and how a forum works.

Thanks in advance!

And THIS....read who said what clearly AGAIN...take a DEEP breath and respond APPROPRIATELY to the people who make the comments!!!

I outlined in my previous post who originally riled you up instead of attacking a person-ME-who never said anything about your anxiety negatively AT ALL.

You are coming at the wrong person-and you are TOTALLY in the wrong for coming at me like like that.

Inappropriate.

No, she responded to you based on my response and basically accusing me of lying when they don't even know how to use the quote button effectively and is responding to quotes that they don't like and merging them into response from me-which is supportive and professional btw-and basically confusing themselves because they are angry about failing, and lashing out.

They need to apologize, calm down, and realize we want to help them and be respectful to what we are saying, especially those who want to guide and support the OP. Instead of calling people liars-not cool.

I really agree with you. I want to like this more than one.

Purchase Uworld AGAIN and try to finish the entire bank DELIGENTLY because its clear you Ok with content, looking at your score..Its the best review so far in my opinion.Eachperson I know of used Uworld and passed the first time including me,a graduated nurse from Africa.Good luck to you and all upcoming test takers!

Hi there! First of all...Good Luck! I took the Nclex 5 times...YES, you read right. 5 TIMES! I was a good student, I did take Kaplan and I failed with the maximum amt of questions. I took Hurst, I failed on the maximum amt. of questions. I reviewed both and studied on my own and failed...FOUR TIMES I failed.

I took Uworld, and I did 200-300 questions daily...EVERYDAY. I renewed it. I took a snack with me, a drink with me, I took breaks. I read the question twice and each answer I asked myself, does this make sense? Is it SAFE? I don't know WHY I didn't do this the 4 other times. I even thought I failed this time too!!! Every time I got the max amount of questions, including this one. I got the maximum this time too....I refused to get my results. I cried and cried. My letter came in yesterday, one year to the day after I graduated. I PASSED! Good luck, take your breaks to regroup and eat a snack and a drink. Make sure your answers make sense and are safe.

Best Wishes!!!

OP, I'm glad you got it all figured out. Since you do, I wish you the best.

Im the one who told you that you were making excuses, and I stand by that. I hope the testing center explained that you needed documentation for your claustrophobia. They are pretty strict on that stuff. I hope your pills and accommodations help. But I would also some remediation as well. That is why I suggested looking at where you failed. But I'm sure you have all the answers there. :whistling:

LadyFree is a different user than me. She also gave you some awesome advice as always. OrganizedChaos is also a smart girl with some experience that may help you.

We were all trying to get you look at why you failed and give you some helpful advice on actually how to pass that test. Putting your head in the sand and not recognizing why you failed won't help you pass next time. It just won't. Nobody on here wants you to fail. We want you to stop living in a fantasy world and really work hard to pass. We want you to pass, believe or not.

But I also realize that not everyone wants tough love. They want Rah-Rah cheerleaders who do nothing to help them succeed. Good Luck, OP. I hope you get it figured out.

I have resources to help you study, if you need something email me [email protected]

Is there another site available for testing? You might ask... Years ago when I took my GED there was a flickering florescent light in the room. For some reason that set my anxiety off and I spent 1/2 the test getting more and more anxious until I just couldn't stand it any more. I explained the problem to the test admin and she happily moved me to a different room. That made all the difference. I was able to finish the test in time- and aced it too :)

. But if you know people who have to take meds for an exam because of anxiety, do you not think the temptation might be there when the anxiety sets in when they're working?

So is it illegal to take anxiety medication while working as an RN? My understanding is that mental health issues do not (in most cases) keep a RN from being licensed or successfully employed.

Many posts on this site have talked about taking Rx meds and drug screens and the answer is always "if you have a valid Rx then you are fine."
