Hello everyone, I just failed my fundamentals/med surg with a 75, the passing rate in my school is a 77. I am completely discouraged and so embarrassed. It hurts knowing I was so close, it hurts seeing my closest friends make it and being the one left behind, it hurts being held back another year. Fortunately, my parents understand but I am so ashamed of my failure. I hate disappointing them. Nursing wasn't exactly my first choice, my parents kind of led me into it because they thought it would be beneficial for my future. I agreed and took up nursing though my true passion is in the culinary arts. They won't let me switch into another major. How can I teach myself the love nursing? The thought of having someone's life in my hands scares me. I am so embarrassed, I feel like I lost all hope in myself and in my future. Any words of advice and motivation will be fully appreciated. Thank you so much.
And besides becoming an important, successful, famous chef is like trying to become a rockstar. Becoming a nurse makes you a rockstar!!!
Perhaps, however, the OP said nothing about becoming "famous and important." Being a famous anything is, well, like trying to be come a rockstar. Yes, it's a somewhat competitive field to reach the top at, but there are still ways to make a living within fields like that. I have several friends who are opera singers, and no, they've never sung at the Met, but they travel and do summer festivals and star in smaller town productions and teach private lessons and most importantly, they are doing what they want to do.
I think you're giving the OP bad advice.
Hiddencat: it was not to say... Don't follow your dreams, but to learn new things can change your dreams especially when someone else is paying. Of course I could have been a rockstar if I wanted was in a pretty successful band but... There was more to learn, I was an artist and followed my dreams and had one HELL OF A GREAT TIME. Sp if I was to give the clearest advice...live life your own way and pay for it yourself. Follow your dreams and don't let the little inconsequential people get in your way because the only reality is yours!
Oh for goodness sake! Do whatever you have to do (work two jobs) to save money enough to pay for your own education. Nursing school is hard enough when you want it. And show your folks the many threads started by experienced nurses who are having trouble finding the jobs they want. You need to stand up for yourself and demonstrate the ability to be independant. Good luck!

You can't learn to to nursing but you may find a very good reason for becoming a nurse. There may be an area that you really like or may be passionate about. Nursing is a diverse ever changing field with developing opportunities. So if you don't have the option to change your major you need to find a particular area that you find important. For example when I get old I want to work for a plastic surgeon. HaHa! Look hard and deep into the career and you just may find an area of interest, an area that is important to you and the world.
