failed drug calc,should i transfer?or do ADN/LVN?

Published

Hi all,

Im new to this site and i am enjoying the perks of seeing success stories and learning from other people too=):)

So here is my case. I am a BSN student, semester 2 and I failed the drug calc exam a few months ago.I decided to withdraw from my med surg theory class because Ive been warned that if I fail another class,I'll be kicked out of nursing school. Since the drug calc exam, its been so crazy, and stressful for me!:crying2: I was not able to do my clinical rotation because I failed the exam. I miss wearing my scrubs and my buddies!Clinical is my my favorite part of nursing and it sucks that I cant do it..Right now I am taking patho and geriatrics. Ive been thinking a lot because I am still waiting for the director of nursing to email/contact me if they would ever let me back in next sem.I filed for a petition of reinstatement for nursing.

I am thinking of transferring to other schools here in the Bay area or other locations. Or even doing ADN?Is this even possible?Ive been going to a University for 5 years and its been a crazy ride for me..I really want to be a nurse! I enjoy having that connection with other people(patients/instructors etc) and this is what i want to do in life.I would like to be a teacher someday, you know.have my MSN and teach future nurses! For now,I need your advice on what should i do?any suggestions?? I would greatly appreciate everybody's input!:)

First of all if you can not pass a DDC exam in a BSN program, how are you going to pass it in an ADN or LVN program when it covers the same material you stated that you did not pass? Having had a negative mark on your transcript is really going to hurt you in trying to get into the ADN programs so I would just go for your LVN, and then once you obtain that do an LVN to RN bridge program :twocents:

If you want to be a nurse badly enough you will buckle down and pass your drug exams. That is where you should be putting your efforts. I would not let you reenter without passing an exam with a high average, like 100%. You have had plenty of time to study.

hei christine2009,thanks so much for the input!

caliotter, yes i am working on mastering the dimensional analysis method to get to the right answer.my problem was,i was taught to use any kind of method and it worked on the first exam(formula method), but not when i took the drug calc exam for second semester.i am using a different approach and its looking like im more comfortable with it.thanks for the feedback!

I am an adult learner and first time I took algerbra I was over 40. This is how I have managed to make friends with math. I study every chapter, take notes, outline and refer back to the section when I had a problem. Since each section builds on the next, it is easy to see where your error is.

Actually, med math is fairly simple. However, when taking the exam you areprobably nervous and being nervous equals mistakes. Cut down on the stress and be prepared for the next exam. Do all the book's questions. If you have problems, ask for help. Does your school have a math lab? By the time you are to take the exam, you should be so prepred that you will not have to think about how to do a problem--you will know how to do it because you have done it over and over. The last thing to remember is to check your work...each time you have solved the problem. If your check does not reflect your answer, go back and redo your work.

Before turning in your test, check everything..labels, rounding, etc. No need in losing points for a simple error.

What I hear is you are rattled; don't let it get you down. You can do it, if you understand the material and practice, practice, practice you should do fine.

thank you so much for the good advice! yes when i took the last exam,i was freaking out,all those emotions rushed in the minute i went inside my professor's office.it was really stressful.Right now I feel pretty good, knowing that when I look at a problem,I know exactly what to do=)

thanks again:)

stay within your school... you can do it.... do all the problems... do them ahead of time and seek help if needed..... idk about your school... but we need 100% of all exams from 1st quarter till the very end..... we dont get 100% we dont continue regardless of our standing in the class
