Explaining: WHY nightshift, to family and friends

Published

:banghead: I'm sure many of you who work nocs have experienced this...

HOW in the heck do you get through to people who think that you are out of your mind for working nights and "normal" people would never CHOOSE to work the night shift...that you LIKE night shift, it is not a punishment, and HELLO nursing is a 24/7 operation and MOST of us knew that when we went into this profession.

My FIL is the worst, I'm sick of making excuses as to why nights are OKAY to work. In my previous career, I also chose to work nights (law enforcement). I have explained all my rationale to him and now I just need some good comebacks. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy...I really like him. He is just very opinionated and I'm sick of the comments! I know I'll never change his mind, I'd just like to shut him up for a while! LOL

there is always someone to make a comment

1] pt will call, ' i am sorry is woke you up but i need something for pain

2] parent of your child's friend will call you to pick up there child when

they are work, 'you can go right back to sleep after you pick him up

from school

3] patient or family will ask about something and when you explain it

to them they smile and say 'i better ask the day shift nurse just to

be sure

4] day shift comes in late for reeport because they just hate to start

another day - i am sure that you don't mind an extra 30 minutes

5] day shift person says we are the ones who deserve the differential

because we work so much harder, have to give more meds and

take off md orders, and make rounds with them etc...then when

you 'ok, lets switch' they look at you like you have two heads

this comes under the can't win dept

Oh, in laws! Augh! Tell him you have no problem with it, and that he's made it clear he does, so he needs to move on. You're providing for your family and doing what you love best, which is the best thing you can do.

Why I love my nights: I am most definitely a night owl! Maybe it's a psychological thing, but going to sleep at 8:30-9am and waking up at 3pm seems indulgent and restful, whereas going to sleep at 9:30-10pm and waking up at 5am makes me want to open a vein. Plus, I feel a little bit of pride: while my patients sleep, I am working vigilantly to keep them okay. The world slumbers, and I stay on the night watch. I also greatly appreciate having my days free, especially when trying to schedule doctor's appts and family stuff. I usually work weekend nights - a perfect schedule for me.

Plus, you can't beat the shift differential. You mean I can get paid more AND I get to stay up all night? Hallelujah!

To all who works nights: do you keep a similar schedule on your days off? Do you stay up most of the night and sleep half the day? My hubby does this, just curious if you do this to make nights easier on your self. He's been doing nights for 20+ years!

I wouldn't work days if you paid me double. I love nights. Thats how I usually start out. Then I say, I am on the same schedule as you just flip the AM to PM. So I go to work at 7 just like you, and get off at 7 just like you but I work the oppisite 12 hrs. I try to get to bed by 10...am, but 10 none the less. Same as you. Then on my off days I revert back to a slelep in the night wake in the day. Or, I have 24 hr clock and I dont sleep, I just nap through out the day:)
