Explain Excelsior to me........

Nursing Students Online Learning

Hi all.......Let me explain my story before I ask for help.........went back to school in fall01, one class at a time, summers off at a local college (maryville university) to take my prereq's such as chem, a&p I & II, psych, soc, micro etc. Then started a local college last fall in their ADN program. Just found out the program is being closed. Not sure what that means for me since I just found out yesterday. Upon searchingh this board for more info, I keep seeing Excelsior and wonder what it is and the cost-any help? thanks in advance

I don't know about the actual courses they give -- I've taken two exams through them (ethics and A&P) to get credit at my college. I've got a high GPA and am a good self-study type, so they OK'd it to fulfill requirements.

I took the exams at a local Pearson testing center. I can't remember the cost, but it's right online.

Like I said, I don't know what they do for courses... I think it's all self-study with guides. Sorry I'm not more help.

Excelsior College (EC) is a distance learning college the bulk of the working is independent studying (your on your own). It's reserved now for professionals, Licensed Practical Nurses, Respiratory Therapist, Paramedics. Could be more but that's all I could think of right now. Since you sound like you have the bulk of the generals completed, it might be a good place for you. You must be one of the above professionals before starting.

I haven't calculated my cost but the benefit for me is that I won't have to leave my full time job and spend less time with my daughter. I can do it on my own time, and the fact that I want to become an RN asap it's the only feasible way for me. I guess for me the benefits outweights the costs.

I'm not sure if you need to go straight into a generic ADN program but if so EC is not the place for that. My suggestion is try another ADN program locally if not try to get into a one year LPN program then come over to EC.

Guys, if I missed something please fell free to correct me.

They take people who have enrolled in a ADN program and have completed at least 50% of the course work. Talk to an admissions counselor at excelsior college, they will explain to to you.

Not to nitpick, but the current admissions policy is at least 50% of the clinical nursing credits, which could make a big difference.

Agree that it might help to talk to an admissions counselor, but one of the criticisms I frequently hear is that this is hard to do if you're not enrolled. As much as I support the school, it can be a not-so-friendly place to call for info at the prospective student stage.

I learned that too....They were not nice at that stage.

Really??? I've called about two times and they were very friendly to me. I haven't even finished my LPN program yet.

But Excelsior will not be an option for you unless you have finished at least 50% of your RN program so you may have to find another way out. Sorry.

I have actually finished 50% of my ADN, and am 6 weeks into the final year.........so about 2 1/2 semesters left to finish my ADN. My problem is that the reason I am thinking of leaving is that the school I am going to is about to lose their accreditation due to low passing scores......will they take me with that sort of background? I have a great gpa, and have done so mostly on my own, my current school is horrible when it comes to teaching. How can I find the passing rate for this school?

Wow! 50% of your ASN has to already have been completed? They are forever changing. When I went through the program you could be a CNA and get your RN.

It was called Regents University when I went through as an LPN. I had been an LPN for 23 years and did my complete ASN through Regents. I didn't use for profit study guides. I used the ones they sent to me and purchased the books and studied, studied, studied and studied some more. The biggest help to me was this group which had just started when I found it. It has really grown and improved. Good Luck to all.
