I had an experience last night where i became the patient. I was working last night doing my rounds and I didn't feel to good, but not too bad either - Just kind of hungry. At 8pm, when I was in a patients room doing the shift assessment, I suddenly felt extremely lightheaded, dizzy, pounding heart, and massive jittery/shakey hands. Next thing I new I was on the floor with the rapid response team and the other floor nurses all over me. Turns out i Passed out/fainted. My memory is blurred from this point on. I was taken to the ED. BP- 90/50, HR-122, Sats-91% R-14.
Severe dehydration brought on by acute gastroenteritis. 5 IV try's with no luck - Finally success! 4 Liters NS infused over 2 and a half hours.....Zofran for nausea. O2 @ 3 liters and tele monitoring. I remember laying on the gurney in the ED, the Techs, the RN. I was discharged home at 11am this morning. I am thanksful that this happened at work with the professionals I work with! Thanks you!!!!

OMG, I am so sorry this happened to you. Wonder what the patient was thinking :)! Hope you are doing better. It amazes me (and I do the same) how nurses never seem to worry about themselves. We never go the bathroom, we never have time to eat, never have time to drink, etc..... You were in the right place at the right time. Get well soon.:loveya:

First I must say I hope you are doing better. Secondly, it is great to know that even though nurses may not see eye-to-eye they will not only care for their pt's but a colleague as well. Please take care of yourself :)

Glad you are feeling better! Are you cleared to go back to work? This is what happens when we go into work feeling bad, instead of calling out.....I'm sending you this piece of cake because I think it looks soooo yummy! :BDCk:

Hope you are feeling much better, and yes, it is comforting to be at work when such things happen. I know one time when I was so sick with the flu, my sister took me to my nursing home where I am the DON. I was over the worst of it, but so dehydrated. I found a back room to lie down in, away from my residents, and had my nurses give me some IV fluids. It felt so good to have them. It is true what bedpan76 said, that we don't like to call in. We'll work until we drop...which is exactly what you did!
