Hi guys! I just need some thoughts. A hospital near my place will be having an open house this for experienced RN's only. I'm currently finding a job and a new graduate with totally no experience. Will it be worth a shot going to the open house? Thanks for the help!

Not unless you are fond of wasting your time. If it states experienced RNs, that's exactly what they're looking for.

They may even black ball you for failing to follow clear instructions of no new grads. Something to consider
Okay thanks for the input guys! Just trying to land a job :)

Good luck in your job search. I don't know where you are or what you are looking for, but if all else fails go to the hospital and talk to the nurse recruiters personally. And LTC is an OK place to start if nothing else is available.
Yes, I'm going to apply in a LTC soon! ill work for 1-2 years there and come back to a hospital.

LTC is a Great learning experience!! And career builder and a great place to stay if you desire it's not the place people go to work when nothing else is available....
I don't work LTC now but I have in the past. I have a great appreciation and respect for those that do!
I didn't mean to make it sound like I was putting it down, and just realized it may sound that way. I meant it is OK to start at an LTC if you need to and there is nothing wrong with it being a career if you love it. I will say however, I do know nurses who felt that they were "stuck" at the LTC once a year passed because the hospital wouldn't call them for an interview. So, if working at the hospital is what you want to do ultimately, talk to the nurse recruiter at the hospital FIRST and then then if that doesn't pan out, get 6 months at the LTC if before re-applying to the hospitals. State you are keeping the LTC as a PRN position (which you can certainly do) and are looking for experience in the hospital. LTC and the hospital are very, very different and so the hospital doesn't always look at it as applicable experience. If you do go to LTC, then look into a high acuity short term stay or rehab facility because there are more similarities there. Good luck!

I went to work at a LTC because nothing else was available, and I think a lot of other nurses have done the same when it is have a job or don't and that is the only place that will hire you. That said, those nurses, including myself, either don't STAY there once they can find a position they want or they find out they love it. I mean, lots of new nurses work med-surg just for the experience or because nothing else is available to them until they have the experience under their belts, not because they love it. In my town, there are more nurses than openings and lots of nurses I know are going to LTC because they can't find anything else. I'm not putting it down, it is simply a fact that I see all the time. BTW, I teach practical/vocational nursing and we also have an ASN program so I spend a lot of time in multiple LTCs in the area and I talk to the nurses. A LOT of them say they got that job because there was nothing else available or they didn't have experience and were trying to get it.
