Exit Exam from Nursing School??

Hello gang!

I'm currently in level II in an ADN program here in Buffalo, N.Y. The news around our program is regarding the exit exam from the program. I'd never heard of an exit exam until this semester. To graduate from our program, the student needs to score higher than the national average. They have three attempts to complete this - two during the semester, and one after the semester. If they don't pass it, they have to repeat level IV theory. After two attempts, only 9 out of 64 students in Level IV have successfully passed the exit exam this semester. Do all schools have this exit exam? How come I've never heard of this before? What are the stats like at your school?

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

Can someone tell me what HESI stands for, and where the test comes from? Just curious ...

We take the NLN achievement tests at the end of every semester, and after every 8-week specialty during our second year. We don't get the results for about 6 weeks, so performance on the tests isn't tied to advancement in the program. But students w/poor performance on the tests do get individually "counseled," I believe.

What college are you going to in Buffalo? I graduate from ecc north next semester(if all goes well). We have to take the exam in February. I'm hoping I don't have to repeat it, but we'll see.....

You can get some information about the exams here: http://www.hesitest.com/

It should be noted that there are several different types of HESI tests. I've actually taken about 6 different tests over the last four semesters and will take two others next semester.

Hi Belleo924!

I go to ECC city! I'm just about to start my 3rd semester. I did my pre-reqs at north in the fall of '03. I took NU115 at North with Daut. I think I still remember some of the names of the students: I remember Gene and Mindy S. for sure. What do you guys have to do for an exit exam?

In your post above, "...if all goes well..." - I say that all the time too!

UPDATE: The staff at our campus through their infinite wisdom have now passed 40 out of 60 students. The rest have one last chance in January.

I just graduated from NCCC in May (Sanborn, NY). We started out with about 130 freshman and a little over 50 ended up graduating. Their pass rate for the NCLEX was something like 97 percent and they beat us up the whole way through. Most of us thought that is was just to keep their pass rate up and for accreditation reasons, etc. I wish I had gone somewhere else but I did pass the NCLEX the first time!! Also in order to graduate we had to pass a practice NCLEX exam. Not sure if this is anything like you are referring to though.
